Summer heat in Oklahoma can be brutal once it “really” hits. Last year the sixty-something days of oppressive triple digit temps mixed with the drought were devastating for our state. I have friends from “cooler” states that ask, “How can you stand it? I could never live there.” Well, you just “do it”. And then almost always, when you think you cannot stand the heat any longer, a surprise gift of a cloudy afternoon might blow in. The temps may drop to the 90’s. You find yourself grateful. It’s the little things, ya know?
I was thinking about those “little” things yesterday while I was mowing our backyard. As I bumped the white crepe myrtle with my lawn mower, the white blossoms showered the ground and in my head I thought, “Awwww….summer snow”. I was reminded of when I was a little girl, spending summer days with my grandparents in southern Oklahoma. Grandma always had beautiful crepe myrtles by the front porch. We would sit on the porch swing enjoying root beer floats. Later Grandpa might break open a watermelon. But there was always another story to tell and a neighbor to wave to, while we sat outside and watched the clouds, hoping for a cool breeze.
Have a great day friends, and be nice to people ~ And as my dad always says when the temps get this warm, “Think Cool”. ♥
Lovely storytelling, Paula. You ARE cool!
haha! I’m THINKING cool, Naomi ~ ty!
Love the Crepe Myrtle photos, one of my favorite flowers! They seem to tolerate this heat we have so well. I’m gonna try and think cool too! 🙂 Thanks for sharing!
The hotter it gets, like bermuda grass…crepes explode! Be safe and you are already “cool”, Juliana! ♥
Love the memories of your grandparents porch! You are indeed blessed to have such beautiful memories! I’ll think of you as we enjoy our “cool” 75 degree summer on the CA coast:)
Enjoy it and think of us here….. 😉
We’ve got a huge, old, Crepe Myrtle tree in our front yard, one of the largest in our neighborhood, from what neighbors told us when we first moved in. Such an amazing tree! The blossoms are a vibrant pink/purple that explode in the hottest part of summer…just like ya said! Love the summer memories..the best of times. Reminds me to get the fixin’s for root beer floats. Wonderful story – and I’m impressed that you mow the back lawn! 🙂 stay cool if you can!
Thanks, Bonnie….Mowing is good exercise (push mower, of course) but when it gets this hot…I am tempted to forget it….but then my OCD kicks in…and I mow. I made lemonade yesterday. But that root beer float is sounding good about now to me , too! Enjoy yours! Cheers! ♥
