Make New Friends ~ Keep the Old

I recall learning this little song from our elementary music teacher, Mr. Culp.

♪ ♫ ♪ “Make new friends, Keep the old, One is silver and the other gold.”  ♪ ♫♫

I also remember learning this one. “Keep your hands to yourself and your feet on the floor, Stay in line every time as you pass through the door.”  But then, this has about as much to do with the post as learning the “Pennsylvania Polka” in first grade.   which yes, I DO still sing!

Back to friends.  I had a little adventure and the wonderful pleasure of meeting up with two awesome women that I came to know through this blog.  One has even contributed a couple of times!  Thursday evening we met.  In person.  We broke bread together. (well, we broke salad and ribs and chicken!)  Two delightful sisters that were in town for a couple of days.  It was a celebration.  Someone was turning 50.  And she was not draggin’ her feet about it, either.  You see, just a few years ago, Shannon had a brain tumor.  She is a miracle.  She knows it.  And her sister, Christi?  She knows it, too.  Hence the week plus long celebration!  My heart just feels so blessed and I felt honored to join their party!

Now for the “old” friend?  Well, she is not old at all and she loves to remind me that she is younger than I and will never catch up!  Debbie and I grew up in the same town and knew “of” each other, but there it is again.  The age thing.  We were never in classes together.  And then one day, years later, our two families were brought together.  I have to think it was a “God” thing, really.  We all clicked.  Our boys, her son.  Our hubbys.  It all just worked.  And since then we have moved and moved.  They have moved and moved. Our kids are all married.  When we DO get together, we are home again Shoes kicked off, speaking our hearts, never missing a beat.  These are the friendships we can only dream of……and yet, we are living that dream.  Happy Birthday, dear friend, Debbie G.  You know I love you ♥

Silver or gold?…..friendships cannot be measured as such.  But I still like the song ~ ♥

Thank you so much for sharing our evening with us. It was a honor to meet you, as you are a beautiful woman, both inside and out. Christi and I try to schedule time to share together, now that our kids are grown. I’ve moved from our hometown and I miss our Saturday morning coffee talks. These sister trips are truly a blessing. Thank you for the wonderful picture, that I was honestly dreading – it is really good, with what you had to work with and it will be reminder of a wonderful time. Thanks again!!!

    • Loved celebrating with you Shannon! You have so much to be thankful for! We all do ~ I’m so glad you and your sis had a fun trip! Your pics are great! I am making copies for you both 🙂 ♥

  7. Hi Paula, you must have been a Girl Scout. That is our theme song! Wonderful post.

  8. The old adage “Too bad you can’t pick your family as you can your friends” is so true. Friends just let us be who we are and don’t try to change us. They are the ones we can tell our deepest secrets and sometimes our deepest problems. I’m glad you had a little friendship reunion, Paula.

    • While I do have some WONDERFUL family members, I must say there are some that had I picked wouldn’t have made the cut! LOL And those are the same ones sayin’ that about me! 🙂 One of these days hubby & I are gonna head your way, Delores. We have much to talk about in person! 🙂 (oh…hope this doesn’t scare you!) ♥

Those are wonderful photos. I especially like the one with the guitar. I do love this little song; it rings truth and also makes me think of the “reason, season, and lifetime” poem. The friends I have been blessed to meet and keep throughout the years, I am incredibly thankful for. And even the relationships that didn’t last, I trust were purposeful in their moment.

    Blessings,
    Cara

    • 🙂 I love the gs reminders, today! I just remember singing in GS, “black socks they never get dirty, the longer you wear them the blacker they get. sometimes I think that I’ll wash them, but something inside me says don’t wash them yet.” ♫ ♪ ♫

Here’s to GIRLFRIENDS! One of my “oldest” ones is Delores in Arizona. She’s a gem to be sure:) So enjoyed your reunion story about friendships!

  13. That’s awesome – I too have met up with people I’ve met online – I married one of them – but that hasn’t put me off…

  14. Jeannette means I REALLY am her oldest friend in age, as well as about 30 years of friendship. Paula it would be our pleasure to meet you and your hubby. Just make sure you don’t come here in the summer, as you might find yourselves in the middle of a “Haboob”.

  15. What a lovely post about such good friends…. a loving tribute to those you love and have connected with for so long. I love to hear about old friends who keep in touch even through the years of moving away from each other , with all of life’s changes- yet you are able to pick up when you get together like no time has passed.. Just a wonderful inspiring post.. Thanks so much Paula for sharing… you write so well about your life experiences…. and I always enjoy them so much.
