Thirty-One Valentines and a Lawn Mower

We met at Taco Bueno during our college days. He was with his friends. I was with my friends. He asked one my friends out. His friend asked me out. Neither of those worked. Sometime later a group of us were at his and his roommate’s apartment watching MASH (a Sunday night thing to do back in those days.)  I slipped into the bathroom and wrote on his mirror with lipstick. I don’t even recall WHAT I wrote, but he caught me. confession….I wanted to be caught!   Smiles.  A bit later we went on our first date.  I had worked late that night and most places were already closed.  We went to Coit’s Drive-In, in NW Oklahoma City, and had a frosted mug of root beer.  Two weeks later, he asked me to marry him.  I said yes.

Yep, there is much more to the story.  Like our very first Valentine’s Day.  He bought me a Lawnboy push mower.  He also surprised me with diamond earrings.  A good balance.  So I moved forward with the wedding plans.  That was thirty-one years ago.  Has every day been happy and perfect?  Nope.  But we try to dwell on the happy.  They far outweigh the tough ones.  We’ll never hit perfection, but the joy is in trying.

Happy Valentine’s Day, My Love ♥  No more lawn mowers please.

  3. When we have unconditional love, our days don’t all have to be perfect. We know the love is there and everything is still okay.

  18. I love this; y’all are so sweet! I know there has to be more to the story of the lawnmower, just like there is to the story of my engagement ring being paid for with a toilet! 🙂

Such a nice story. If you’ve lasted the ups and downs for over thirty years, you must both be doing something right. Forget about perfect, I agree with the Beatles when they say, ‘All you need is love, love, love is all you need’ 🙂
