The Cab Ride

I read this post from my friend Rhonda, this morning, before I even crawled out of bed. Quite the morning devotional. It made me think of many things….Kindness, slowing down to think of the situation of another, aging, having to depend on another when you’ve been independent your entire life. Whether corporate position or blue collar position, unemployed or stay at home mommy ~ none of that matters in the end, now does it? Slow down, think of others, put yourself in their shoes. Lord ~ Make me a better person ♥

p.s. And a big old shout-out to my friend since 2nd grade…Lauri…..Happy Birthday!!! ♥

I arrived at the address and honked the horn.

After waiting a few minutes I walked to the door and knocked.

‘Just a minute’, answered a frail, elderly voice.

I could hear something being dragged across the floor.

After a long pause, the door opened.

A small woman in her 90’s stood before me.

She was wearing a print dress and a pillbox hat with a veil pinned on it, like somebody out of a 1940’s movie.

By her side was a small nylon suitcase.

The apartment looked as if no one had lived in it for years.

All the furniture was covered with sheets.

There were no clocks on the walls, no knickknacks or utensils on the counters.

In the corner was a cardboard box filled with photos and glassware.

‘Would you carry my bag out to the car?’ she said.

I took the suitcase to the cab, then returned to assist the woman.

She took my arm and we walked slowly…

To Beat the Sun

I don’t know what it is about a sunset that grabs me. Yet it does. Every time.
I head outside to run the dogs, and am stopped by the grand display in the sky.
Back inside I go….grabbing camera, purse, car keys…..yelling to hubby…..”I’ve gotta hurry to beat the sun, do you wanna go?” He always says yes.  *smile

I Had a Friend

I lost a dear friend last week, unexpectedly.  I was in third grade when she and her young family moved to our little town to pastor our congregation of small numbers. They were college students. I grew up with her. She grew up with me! She is why I still eat gravy on my rice, and why I love gumbo without the okra! She and my sister are why I still giggle when I see bologna in the deli case. So many sweet memories. ♥

We never lost contact over the years. We shared secrets, sorrows and joys. We laughed. We laughed a LOT.
Bible
Berta presented me with this Bible when I was nine years old. The pages are full of writings and notes. A few months ago I found this  again, so I  snapped a photo and sent it to Berta on Facebook. This was our exchange:

How blessed I was as a child to have you, Berta, and your hubby in my life! Thank you. Love you~

Berta ~Thanks for sharing~ that somehow makes life worth living as a Pastor’s wife. So many times I have failed, but you and your family in our lives meant so much. May God continue to bless you. Love you all so very much May 2 at 5:00pm · (personal note ~ Berta never failed anyone!)

Paula~ You and Darrell have always meant so much to all of us. You have touched more lives than you can ever know! NOT TO MENTION….how many fun songs you taught me as a little girl! I still sing them!

Berta~ And riding in the car with an umbrella!

Paula ~ and losing a wheel going down the road! 🙂                            ………….

Today I reflect, as I grieve for her family’s loss.  I am so grateful to have had Berta in my life.  She was a friend, always.  She was family.  She made the world a better place.  I already miss her, but I’m pretty sure I hear the angels singing.  I bet she’s teaching them our songs. ♥bible 2

Rosalie

It is with great sadness I share with you an update on little Rosalie. Many of you were following me last summer when I shared Rosalie’s life-threatening accident. (Read post here.)  Please join me in remembering this family in your thoughts and prayers.

The following post was made by Rosalie’s family last night on their Facebook page:

We would like to thank our Lord and savior for Rosalie’s life. What a blessing this sweet Child of God has been in our life. Our life will be forever changed because of Rose. I know that she has brought Jesus back into many hearts that surround her, being such a light for Gods Kingdom. Tonight Rosalie went to be with Jesus. She had a mighty purpose here on earth and I know that Christ is being glorified through her. What an honor it was to be her Mommy and Daddy. She will be forever missed in our heart but we know we will see her in Heaven once again and what a glorious day that will be! Please continue to keep us all in your prayers as we walk hand in hand with Christ seeking his face during this time. ♥♥♥

Visiting Small Town America ~ Pryor, Oklahoma

cowboys day tent 032A few weeks ago, hubby and I went on a no destination Sunday drive.  We ended up in Pryor, Oklahoma, where it happened to be American Cowboy Trade Days at Whitaker Park.  Even though we were not sporting our boots…this did not stop us from checking out the excitement.cowboys day and winecowboys day saddles

The folks camp over the weekend at this event. The city park is on a duck filled pond and is lined with old shade trees. You can attend Cowboy Church, have a breakfast of biscuits and gravy , and shop the interesting wares.  Visiting with the vendors is like chatting with a neighbor. the good neighbors, of course! 🙂

As we wandered through….I was drawn back to an area we had previously passed. I heard the music. Isn’t it funny how music can lure you in? When I approached, there sat a gentleman cowboy, strumming his guitar and singing his tunes. Some songs were familiar, and the ones that weren’t, became familiar quickly.cowboys day and guitar up closecowboys day guitar

The song that stuck in my mind was about an old horse. The cowboy sang about the horse being told he was just too old and was of no use anymore. Others were wanting to get rid of him. But the singer vowed to feed him and shelter him. For when the cowboy looked into the old horses eyes….he still saw youthfulness and life.

You sure can learn a lot from a cowboy. ♥

P.S.  The tongue is a powerful tool.  We are given the choice every day to speak either life or death to each person we are in contact with.  Speak Life. ♥

Can’t Please Everyone

Well ain’t it the truth. You really can’t please everyone! Happy Wednesday people. Enjoy the reblog! paula ♥

Dr. Seuss

You write what you want
Because you are what you write
Others will do what will

Start your story off slow
Or start it off fast
The pace is yours to grow

Follow the trends if you so wish
Or go off on your own
And create a new niche

People will love it
People will hate it
So it is as it is

If one could please everyone
Then we’d all be the same
Sadly we’re not, which is not really a shame

(This rhyming scheme is brought to you by ‘Accident’.)

Inspired by Old Glory

It’s been a busy sort of week. Each time I’d sit down to “blog” to my friends ~ nothing. Perhaps it was because I continued to picture the unrelenting “to do” list in my mind?

Then last night….I went to a concert with hubby. I’m a country loving gal….but one of his favorite groups is Journey, and well….of course I escorted him! I was caught up in watching the buzz of all the people coming and going. (Am I the only person who goes to a concert and stays in my spot?!?!) And while I was counting up the number of beers the itty bitty thang sitting in front of me had consumed….. I heard a familiar sound…..in a most unfamiliar rendition.  The Star Spangled Banner as performed by Neal Schon of Journey. The entire demeanor of this sold out crowd changed in just one moment!  Everyone was on their feet, applauding or holding their hand over their heart, out of respect, honor and love for this country.  For those that have served and sacrificed.  For those that still do. flag by journeyThe song ended, the audience calmed. My mind began to reflect on my week.  I had a surprise visitor at my door on Wednesday.  The father of one of my neighbors…. a veteran…. he handed me a flag and said,  “I noticed your flag out front is a little tattered, so I thought you might be able to use this.”  This act of kindness meant more than he could ever know.  Hubby replaced the flag that evening. Then he walked across the street to thank the giver of this gift.   The wind was blowing just right and they both agreed it was a sight to behold.  Those stars and stripes in the sunset.flag - gift

Just the night before this….our oldest son posted a new song he’d written.  The title?  Well OLD GLORY, of course.  I hope you’ll take a listen.

Wishing you each the best.  We are surrounded by so many blessings, but sometimes they just slip by because we’re too busy with a list that doesn’t really even matter. ♥

p.s.  A Shout-Out to my dear friend, Debbie G.  Happy Happy Birthday! What a blessing you are in my life!  ♥♥♥
