Observations

On the outer edge of our town is Stone Canyon.  A lovely area that is trying to grow through community outreach and service.  Last night, hubby and I attended one of their Sunset Concerts.  I thought I would share some observations of the evening with you ~                                                        The Something Steel BandLoving the art work on the face 😉Living on Tulsa time ~The Ice Crystals Van (sweet-tart = yum)

Killer Wasp Prisoner

I have felt like a prisoner in my own home for a couple of weeks now.  My green grass is fading for lack of water.  There are sprigs of Bermuda grass popping up in my flower beds.  Some of the flowers are dying.  You are thinking drought, right?  The real reason?  I am a big chicken.  We have become infested with cicada killer wasps.  And each time I go outside, here they come. I never go out now without a can of hornet spray.  Last week I mowed the yard with the can tucked under my arm.  Several times I took off running, screaming, my arms flailing, while attempting to spray the varmint.  For any neighbors looking on, it has to be a hoot. I wonder if I’m on YouTube? 🙂                                                             cicada killer wasp mounds

Last summer, our little Sugar dog stuck her nose in one the mounds that house the cicada killers.  It got her. Poor baby.  (That was a vet visit.)

I have done my research on how to rid them from our yard. (How to Get Rid of Ground Digger Wasps) The first article said to leave them alone.  They will only stay around a month or so. The spray simply slows them down so you can squish them. But I don’t squish things. They say only the females can sting, but that the males are aggressive.  When I am dashing across the yard, I can assure you I am not a bit curious about the gender of the predator.  My neighbor a couple of houses down, joins me in the seriousness of the matter.  His new weapon of choice?  A racquet ball racquet.  Yep.  He is a brave man.  And he had quite a good little collection of critters on his front sidewalk!

Yesterday, the evil of all evils occurred.  While I was attempting to let the pups inside, guess who came in instead?  HORRORS!  My heart was racing.  I had to think fast.  He-She was buzzing at my head. SOOOOOO…..I turned loose of the screen door while slamming the backdoor shut at the same time.  The creature was now trapped between the two doors.  My poor little dogs were gazing at me through the back window.  I had to get them inside without opening those doors.  I found their leashes and headed around the house through the gate, leashed the girls and brought them in the house.  Then I started worrying about my trapped friend.  Could he wiggle inside through a crevice? (hubby says they could not)  I grabbed my blue masking tape and taped off all seams of the door.  I also sent my hubby a “HELP” text.

Hubby arrived a little while later.  He went through the backyard, opened the backdoor and sprayed the little critter.  I watched, holding my backup can of Real Kill.  I am braver when I have a sidekick.  but not much!  Then we came inside and hubby removed all the blue tape from the backdoor.

Hubby was my hero, again.  He commended me for acting quickly and thinking on my feet. 😉 He says if we ever have atomic warfare, he will feel safe with me in charge.  Cause I am the queen of taping off crevices and seams.  😉

This is my life.  For another month? I am going to hire someone to mow.  For one month.  Oh bother ~

Hope YOU have a good day.  Free of critters!

p.s.  After midnight last night, we attempted the method used in the above article.  We shall see what happens ~

By the end of the day, we will have exceeded 15,000 views yes, I guess I am optimistic?. AND as if that wasn’t enough, I’ve received a couple of awards! (and I’m in a game of tag with Maggie at Fly Away Home….and I’m still it!)

Thank you, thank you, thank you to each person who has ever taken the time to read my blog and a big hug if you’ve come back a second or even third time!  It’s true.  You never know what you are gonna get here.  I never know either! 😉  My appreciation goes deeper than you can ever know. ♥

My friend, Carri, at Simply Done Wright, has awarded me with the Liebster Award.  In a nutshell, it is a very sweet newbie award.  And that is me.  No, not sweet.  But definitely a newbie. Carri has been a great help and inspiration.  (she is going back to college this fall!)  She is positive, crafty, funny, and makes some awesome food.  Go see her.  She might feed you! 😉  Thank you, Carri!

Rhonda, Rhonda, Rhonda, at Help Me Rhonda, has gifted me with the Reader Appreciation Award.  You must check out her blog!  One post with have you laughing out loud and the next will show you the depth of her soul.  She keeps me on my toes and never ceases to amaze me with her talents.  Many thanks to Rhonda! 😉

And then there is my friend Maggie.  She tagged me in a game a while back.  I guess I am a lethargic athlete, as I am just now getting to it!  Maggie is the author of the book, Fly Away Home.  I had the honor of reading it this summer.  In many ways I felt that I should close the book and not read further.  It is personal.  It is honest.  A well composed story of her life challenges, tragedies and loves.  Thank you, Maggie.  You were brave to relive through your book what others might choose to bury.  I know many will be helped because of your choice. ♥

There are “rules” that go with each of the above awards.  I may get “un” awarded for not following, but….I am sharing a handful of the MANY blogs that I follow.  To these bloggers:  If you have not yet received these awards, then consider yourself awarded!  Your pics, thoughts, and writings are amazing, as are your comments and blog “love” shown to me. Though I am being non-trad with the system, my appreciation for your work is sincere. ♥

Today is Saturday. How ’bout Lemonade?

My days have been all mixed up this week because of our holiday.  I did figure out that today is Saturday, and skipped over to the farmer’s market.  We are experiencing one of our “surprise” weather days, this morning.  Heavy clouds, temps in the 80’s and a very light rain.  Perfect.  If only for a few hours.  I am still grateful! Fresh eggs….yep, I should have checked the carton, one is broken. ;( Porter peaches, an heirloom tomato AND cannot wait to try lemon cucumbers! (the small round stripes)I found my GROOVE today!  I usually purchase my lye soaps from Laughing Rabbit. I have five bars in route.  But today, I discovered Blue Turtle and am trying her “near patchouli” version.  (and as it turns out, Blue Turtle knows Laughing Rabbit!)  Ok~ enough.  This is a weird conversation. 🙂

Two fun and as usual for me   easy recipes are what I shall share with you today.  Then I am going to run out to fertilize the yard in the rain.  😉

Strawberry Lemonade

I made this last night and hubby’s words, “This is the best drink I have ever had.”  Of course, it WAS 102 degrees out so he was hot and thirsty.  Still….see what you think:

In a blender mix:

1 can frozen lemonade or limeade

Desired amount of cleaned ripe strawberries. (I added about 8-10)

1 cup water

1 – 1 1/2 cup crushed ice (OR pour drink over ice to serve)

Blend, Pour, DRINK!  This is very refreshing and will cool you down.  Design it to your preference by adding more or less water. This lemonade is tart. If you prefer sweet, you might add sprite or sugar or a bit of honey.  Also tasty with a touch of ginger ale or your favorite “spirits”.I froze what was left for slushies later!

Cake Mix Cookies

I made these for my hubby to share with his employees this week, since they had to work on Independence Day.  I have a sweet tooth and these cookies are super easy and yummy!

1 boxed white cake mix (I used confetti white, but I think you could use ANY flavor)

3 TB cooking oil (about ~ I do not “measure”)

2 eggs

1 can prepared icing (I used plain old “WHITE”, cause I love wedding cake icing!)

Preheat oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit.  Mix the first three ingredients.  If it seems too dry, you might add a smidge of water.  But not much!  Spoon onto ungreased cookie sheet using an ice cream scoop.  Do not smash down.  Bake for about 6-7 minutes or until top and edges brown a little.  Let cool for 1-2 minutes on cooling rack.  Remove and ice while still warm.  Add sprinkles (if desired) immediately.  Makes about 20 moist cookies.HaPPy Saturday!  For my friends in the heat and drought areas….I wish you clouds and RAIN!  For my friends in the cool areas….. wow….enjoy!  Be nice to people ♥

On This Day, in 1909…

Edna & Lila, cousins ~ wading through the flooded cornfields in Boswell, Oklahoma

Today I am thinking of Lila Jane Warren.  My “grandma”.  (on the right)  She was born on July 3, 1909.  I think this may be the only childhood photo I have of her. Though the pic is old and faded, see her smile?  It certainly never faded.  You never left her house hungry OR empty-handed.  She loved you and anyone that happened to be with you.  She and Grandpa Bug raised eight pretty remarkable kids, too.  They lived through some tough times.  But much like the picture above, no matter how deep or murky life got, she just stepped a little higher, smiled, and moved forward.  What great life lessons she has left with us.  So, Happy Birthday, Grandma!  I miss you everyday.  Till we meet again~ ♥

Aunt Betty’s Lemonade Pie

I made a lemonade pie last week for the first time in a VERY long time.  My Aunt Betty used to bring this to family gatherings and so I always think of her when I am buying the ingredients.  It is very refreshing for summertime, perfect for July 4th !  Since I just made this, you would think I’d have pictures to share?  Nope.  I forgot.  The recipe makes enough for two pies, so I shared one with my neighbor and about three bites into MY piece of pie, I said to my hubby, “I frorgot tu tae hicturs”. Translation?  for being so rude and talking with mouth full   I forgot to take pictures!  We looked at each other, and continued eating our pie.

So here is the recipe….no pie pictures though! 😉

Aunt Betty’s Lemonade Pie

2 graham cracker crusts

1 can sweetened condensed milk (there is fat-free available)

1 large container cool whip (I us “light”)

1/2 can frozen lemonade OR limeade

Mix the sweetened condensed milk with the lemonade until smooth.  Fold in cool whip and mix well.  Pour into crusts.  Set bowl aside.  Refrigerate OR freeze pies.  I think this pie is better after it has set over night, personally.  Top with your favorite fruit or eat without.  We had fresh blueberries and strawberries and they were a delicious mix.  Okay…now go lick that bowl!                                                  Meet Aunt Betty ~  Isn’t she pretty?               And more of our unruly gang ~ we sure have fun when we get to hang out!

Happy Monday, people!  Be nice to each other.  (It can be a little tougher to do that on Mondays) ♥
