Sunshine

snow in feb 010
I’ll be first to admit that I am not a huge fan of snow. But when it does arrive, I can’t help but feel that Christmas Eve flutter in my gut. Snow is beautiful.  It is exciting! at first fall

Stomping around in the snow yesterday, I noticed “the sun”. No, not that one….the one pictured below. Hubby surprised me with it last summer. He has called me Sunshine since we started dating. I am his sunshine ~ and knowing that does warm my soul. ♥

“Garland-isms”

Mom & Dad's Flower Garden

Mom & Dad’s Flower Garden

mom and dad's 2010- 004

Today is an EXTRA special day.  It’s our dad, Garland’s, birthday.  I won’t tell you how old he is, but if you are familiar with Elvis Presley, well, they were born the same year.  And while I can imagine dad singing on stage.  I just can’t picture the white sequin jumpsuit and the flashy scarf. 😉

In honor of my dad’s day, several folks have shared a bit of wisdom that he has spoken to them over the years.  So sit back and enjoy a few “Garland-isms”:

“If you can’t take advantage of your relatives, who can you take advantage of?”  “It’s not fair?  Life is not fair” ~hubby

Three things I especially remember. 1- He was always adamant about good posture when we were in school.  I  recall him sitting in the bleachers on the opposite side of us in the gym.  All he had to do was give us the “eye” and do his ram rod straight thing and every teenager on our side would immediately throw their shoulders back and sit up straight!  2-  When meeting him as I was driving down Main Street, his hands, of course, were always on 10 and 2 (!).  He would give the one finger wave of the index finger. 3- Whenever I (or any of us) happened to be whining about doing some chore or homework, he would always look at us and sternly declare, “It builds character.”  ~ Julie B. (Love & Birthday Greetings!)

“You’re first in line, right after me!” (This is at Sunday dinner!) “Keep your friends close, your enemies closer.” ~ Sister Renae & her hubby

Never date an ugly woman. Treat em nice, but leave em at home.  ~ Grandson, Chi

You can only get good cognac in France!  ~ Grandson, Mad

Glass eyes are tricky! ~ Erin, Granddaughter

Look it up.” ~ These are the three words spoken to us so many times while growing up.  They sent me to search dictionaries, encyclopedias and libraries.  These words instilled in me a love of learning, research and reading.  These words are why my boys were raised with a hunger for learning.  “Look it up.” Good advice, dad!  Still using it!  ~ Paula

HaPPy BiRtHdAy and Much Love, Daddy!  Thanks to you and mom for raising us right!  (although I really do hate this responsibility thing!  lol)  ♥

Disclaimer to my dad….The above quotes were sent to me via texts.  If you prefer to challenge any of these “isms”….we’ll just say they were paraphrased or perhaps due to a memory lapse on the part of the contributor.  😉

(If I didn’t get your “ism” in the post, please add it in the comments)

The Drive Home

When late morning rolls around and you’re feeling a bit out of sorts, don’t worry; you’re probably just a little eleven o’clockish.

How Great Thou Art

Another Sunset

Another Sunset

 How Great Thou Art

Oh Lord my God! When I in awesome wonder
Consider all the works thy hand hath made,
I see the stars, I hear the mighty thunder,
Thy power throughout the universe displayed;

Refrain:
Then sings my soul, my Saviour God, to Thee,
How great Thou art, how great Thou art!
Then sings my soul, my Saviour God, to Thee,
How great Thou art, how great Thou art!

When through the woods and forest glades I wander
and hear the birds sing sweetly in the trees;
when I look down from lofty mountain grandeur,
and hear the brook, and feel the gentle breeze… by Carl Gustav Boberg

Thirty-One Valentines and a Lawn Mower

We met at Taco Bueno during our college days. He was with his friends. I was with my friends. He asked one my friends out. His friend asked me out. Neither of those worked. Sometime later a group of us were at his and his roommate’s apartment watching MASH (a Sunday night thing to do back in those days.)  I slipped into the bathroom and wrote on his mirror with lipstick. I don’t even recall WHAT I wrote, but he caught me. confession….I wanted to be caught!   Smiles.  A bit later we went on our first date.  I had worked late that night and most places were already closed.  We went to Coit’s Drive-In, in NW Oklahoma City, and had a frosted mug of root beer.  Two weeks later, he asked me to marry him.  I said yes.

Yep, there is much more to the story.  Like our very first Valentine’s Day.  He bought me a Lawnboy push mower.  He also surprised me with diamond earrings.  A good balance.  So I moved forward with the wedding plans.  That was thirty-one years ago.  Has every day been happy and perfect?  Nope.  But we try to dwell on the happy.  They far outweigh the tough ones.  We’ll never hit perfection, but the joy is in trying.

Happy Valentine’s Day, My Love ♥  No more lawn mowers please.

Dress Nathan Out!

I could write several paragraphs attempting to explain how a little town in Oklahoma pulled together for their highschool team manager, Nathan.  I could tell you about how his teammates, towns people, coaches and perfect strangers rallied for him.  But instead, ….I’ll just let you see for yourself in the following short clip.

#Dress Nathan Out!

Congrats to Nathan!  And to his awesome team.  This was a night to remember! ♥

NEXT

Since hubby was off last weekend, we decided to take a drive to a small town about 45 minutes away. We’d heard there was an auction on Saturdays and wanted to check it out. When we arrived, it was obvious by the number of trucks surrounding the place, that we should have arrived earlier. Regardless, we signed in, got our number, and found a place to settle in for a couple of hours. I don’t know if you’ve ever been to an auction or not, but it can be a real rush. when you possess a competitive soul!

The "soup"~

The “soup”~

I noticed a concession area when we walked in. I made a mental note at the time, “Only canned drinks or bottled water ~ nothing from the crockpots.” yes ~ I’m a germaphobic There were three people sitting to my right, with a couple of chairs in-between. The person on the end left briefly, and came back with a big bowl of soup and some crackers. It did smell and look delicious! They took their turn at eating the soup, then handed it to the woman in the middle, who ate on it a while. The grandmother, closest to me, then took the tray as it was her turn to eat the soup. I leaned over to hubby, who by now was observing my observing, and said, “I sure hope she finishes that off because I’m next!” And she did. Whew!   😉

Hope your weekend is a fun and safe one! And to my friends dealing with the blizzards right now, (like, Help Me Rhonda!) you are in my thoughts and prayers ♥

Pizza and My Hot Sister

Back in December, David Harding, his brother and his cousin, Chris, created accidently on purpose a fun little pizza challenge. PizzaBoxDrawcember was the chosen name.  Check out the post.  It’s a hoot.  In a nutshell, the challenge was: During the month of December, if you order out pizza, ask them to draw a gorilla playing dice in the lid of the pizza box.  SEE if they’ll play along.  I told you it was fun!

We first learned of the challenge from Maddie’s post, Sunday Night Pizza Bender.  Maddie had some good luck with her pizza artists.  But I think her family grew tired of pizza.

Well it just so happened that I talked to my sister, Renae, right after reading this post.  Yep, you guessed it, she was getting ready to call in a pizza.  I told her about the post, and unbeknownst to her hubby, who would be picking it up, she made her request known to the person taking the order.  Her folks rolled with it and this was their artwork:Image

I think the gorilla must be hiding behind the tree?  Regardless, good job, Mississippi!

Towards the end of the month when hubby and I finally ordered out pizza from Andolini’s at our local joint, hubby made the request, the order taker was willing on the phone….but it did not happen.  When hubby picked it up the guy just looked at him and said, “we don’t have time for that.”  ;(  Five dollar tip went back into the pocket.  Oklahoma disappointed.

Okay….but now the DRUMROLL PLEASE!!!!!  Parumpapumpum….after a very close vote and a LOT of banter……The above drawing was declared the winner.  Yesterday I was on the phone with Renae yes, we talk often! when a package arrived via airmail to her.  She was so excited! frightened  I remained on the phone in great anticipation while she opened her prize….TAH DAH!!!!
