Rubber Mulch ~ Revisited

I have had several inquiries on the rubber mulch that we put in our flowerbeds last spring.  Here we are a year later.  We are very pleased with the outcome.  It did not fade.  It does not wash away in the rain. not that we’ve had much rain!  Insects are not drawn to it. (Ants seem to like our regular mulch) We did buy a few more bags last week to add in as it does settle a bit.  Overall we give it an “A-“.

The past weekend involved a work in the front yard day. March 31. Our temp reached 92 degrees. Regardless, we made the trip to Home Depot (twice), loaded up with mulch, and started the job. The past couple of years we have debated on trying the rubber mulch. The company claims that the color lasts 12 years. That it will save you work and money not having to re-mulch year after year. No, I don’t believe them. Scotts has a one year color guarantee on their regular mulch and the reality has been about two months, maybe three for our sun in Oklahoma. After visiting with my sister though, (no pressure, Renae!) we decided to go with the rubber mulch this year. The cost is quite a bit more. But if VIGORO’s word is true, we’ll be in good shape. Plus, this time I am keeping the receipt and a bag. I will “call” them on it if there is a problem AND let you know, too!mulch

Besides loading up the mulch, I think the toughest job was watching my hubby dig out the old. It was really hot just standing out there. 😉 Then bagging up what I didn’t reuse to fill the bottom of some flower pots, that was a chore, too. As I write this, it sounds so easy! It took us several hours and we have aches and pains today, so there IS some work involved.mulch 1mulch3

The after really is pretty. And it looks like regular mulch. But it smells like a tire store! (but just at first) We still have the backyard to go. I am doing regular mulch on it and we’ll have a good comparison for the future.mulch4

Oh…and as for our backyard this year and the regular mulch? We’ll be replacing it all. Again.

Who’ll Feed the Birds?

As a child growing up, our parents read us many books and always filled the house and the car with music. I recall sis and I singing and listening to country western, classical, and children’s music. The first songs that pop into my head when I think on this are Tumbling Tumbleweeds, Swan Lake, Mama Teach Me to Dance, and of course…ALL of the songs from Mary Poppins! Specifically….. Feed the Birds.

My mom sent me an idea to help the birds with their nest-building this spring.  It was suggested that you add a mixture of cut strings, twigs, grass, feathers, pine needles, leaves. pebbles, mud ~  Just your every day bird supplies! I picked up my two dollar suet box, filled it and hung it in the big tree out front.

Watching nature at work is simply fascinating! And if you truly love the birds? Well, then be sure and make a visit to see Lorri over at the EFF Stop.  Her images are amazing.  As long as she keeps feeding the birds, they’ll keep posing for her!

Reminding you and “me” this day, to be nice to each other.  It can make a difference. ♥ And a difference needs to me made ~

Eye on the Sky

A little reminder for those that live in “storm” areas.  Spring is here and though tornadoes can occur at ANY time, now seems to be when they are really kicking in.  Our outstanding Oklahoma meteorologists have been preparing us that today could be a rough day.  Our temps are in the 80’s right now and yet a cold front will push through in a few short hours. It’s what everyone is talking about.  Being head’s up today.  Eye on the sky.

I picked hubby up for lunch today and we went to Wal-Mart and tried on bike helmets to add to our tornado closet.  We decided we wanted more protection than they could offer.  The t-ball helmets wouldn’t begin to fit on our heads.  Next I tried an igloo water cooler, but I couldn’t see AND hubby was embarrassed, so we left and went to Lowe’s hubby is so smart. We purchased construction helmets.  They are inexpensive and adjustable. and ugly  Next stop was Hobby Lobby for hot pink stickers!helmet heads

My point in all of this?!?!?  Make your tornado plans now.  Know where to go if you need to take cover.  We do not have a safe room or cellar, so we have a designated interior “closet”.  Recommended things for your designated place: pillows (to shield your body), blankets, helmets and winter coats (again ~ for protection from flying debris).  If you have animals, don’t forget their food and leashes. Bottled water, a whistle or bell (to let people know where you are), flashlights and a battery-powered radio or weather radio. Also, stick your driver’s license safely in your pocket.(tip from my sister)  It doesn’t take much to get these items together.  Hopefully you will never need them, but better to be prepared.

Should You Trust Your Dentist?

dentistThe horrific news in our area the past several days has been one of a local dentist and oral surgeon who has possibly exposed more than 7000 of his patients to infectious diseases.  (Read more here ~ Dental Practice via N2 Owasso. ) Imagine getting THAT letter in the mail!  The health department opened on Saturday to begin testing these patients.  Folks were lined up, anxious to find out their outcomes.

This man practiced in our town.  This says to me, it could happen anywhere, to anyone.  I struggle wrapping my brain around how a professional could allow this.  My next thought, “I am going to be having a visit with our dentist before my next visit.”  I have shared before about my anxiety issues with the dentist. (Read “Puppy Anxiety“.)  I find my thoughts running wild on how we simply “spin the wheel” in our lives, trusting so-called professionals, health and otherwise, that we really have no reason to trust!

And then as if he read my mind, I received this reassuring e-mail yesterday from our dentist.

“Recently, a Tulsa area dentist was cited with putting patients at risk of infection with hepatitis by failing to follow proper infection control practices. The Oklahoma Dental Association is closely monitoring the situation.

Let me describe just a few of the things that we do in our practice in terms of infection control.

All dental staff involved in patient care scrub their hands before each and every patient and use appropriate protective garb such as gloves, masks, gowns and eye wear.

  • A new set of gloves and masks are used for each patient.
  • Before you enter the examining room, all surfaces, such as the dental chair, instrument tray, dental light, drawer handles and counter-tops, have been cleaned and decontaminated.
  • Non-disposable dental instruments are cleaned and sterilized between patients. In our office we sterilize instruments using ( an autoclave which involves steam under pressure. If you wish, you could offer for us to show you our sterilization or set-up area).
  • Disposable items like needles or gauze are placed in special bags or containers for special, monitored disposal.

There’s no excuse for what this dental office did. It is you right as a patient to ask any healthcare provider to explain their practices to you.

Your well-being is important to me and my staff, which is why we follow stringent infection control procedures and comply with all state regulations for the protection of our patients.”

I’m thinking they must have already received numerous phone calls and cancellations?

But I am sharing this with you friends, as a reminder to both you and I to speak up!  Ask questions!  Be “that person”.  If it offends them, maybe that’s your answer for moving on to a practice that will look out for your well-being.  Obviously, we can never be too careful.  Afterall, our lives are in their hands and perhaps we need to remind them of that.

Easter Dogs

The “girls” pups will turn seven the end of this month.  Even with a soggy yard, we continued with our tradition of  the egg hunt.  Trust me when I say, you wouldn’t appreciate the goodies tucked inside the eggs, but they certainly do.  So much so, we had to do it twice!easter 2013 001

My dad often says that our dogs have no idea they are dogs. He is probably right. And at this point in their lives, I guess we won’t tell them.
