My Pleasure ~

When I was a little girl, I recall on a few occasions going with my father to get license plates for the cars or  maybe a driver’s license. In Oklahoma, we refer to these places as “The Tag Agency”.  Mrs. Grimes was our tag agent.  A classy lady that also sold clothing.  It was always a pleasant experience.  Later, Mrs. Redburn took over the  agency.  Another sweet lady.

I’m not sure what happened after Tuttle, America.  Other than dread.  Oklahoma City, etc- the folks running the tag agencies were not happy campers.  THEN we discovered the true DMV (Department of Motor Vehicles) when we moved to Arkansas.  It was just like what they made fun of on television!  Long lines, rude workers and bad attitudes.  I learned quickly to adjust my attitude to theirs to survive!  The same in Texas and Missouri.

We have been back in Oklahoma for four years now.  Round one at the highway patrol station when we first moved here wasn’t so bad.  Other than the waiting.  But then when we drove to the actual “agency” in our little town to get our license with our just approved papers, the lady told my husband, when looking at his birth certificate, “Well, I would never have accepted this.”  I think this thirty year old didn’t know what a forty something year old birth certificate looked like!  Of course it looks old!   The next year when I had to renew our tags, I went to the OTHER agency in town.  No friendly faces to be found there, either.

So on Friday, hubby and I had to renew our driver’s licenses, again.  We were determined to find a Wanda Grimes or Cinda Redburn.  So we decided to go to the agency in Collinsville, after he got his hair cut at the barber shop there.  A quaint little town near ours that is fun to visit!

Just the day before, all of the Oklahoma License Testing Centers had been closed, mandatory.  They would each have representatives at a statewide meeting to learn about the soon NEW licenses AND a main topic of discussion would be to address the state-wide customer service complaints.  Someone in the state had a terrific idea.  The most pleasant fast food industry is Chick-fil-A.  So they were going to use them as an example to help turn the tables on the bad reps for the agencies. They would teach good customer service.  You never leave Chick-fil-A  without hearing at least once, “My Pleasure”.

So we parked in front of the Collinsville Tag Agency.  The sign on the door of the rather rundown building says they close for lunch from 1pm – 2pm.  We had 10 minutes.  We both BOLT from the truck.  There are just a couple of folks in front of us and three clerks behind the wall.  We had high hopes with all the new training they’d had yesterday PLUS it being a small town friendly place.  No eye contact.  A monotone… “fill this out…they make us do this now”.  “That’ll be $43.00.”  “Step against the wall for your picture.”  Clearly they hated their jobs.  And they hated us.  And sometime during getting my picture done she yelled, “Will somebody lock those front doors!!”  Hubby and I both like to visit with folks.  We tried.  No response.  No eye contact.  After hubby’s photo, she handed me my license and moved to unlock the front door for us.  I mentioned we needed to wait for his license to process first.  If looks could kill.  I think Chick-fil-A has their work cut out for them with this project!

Our next stop was the Sheriff’s office where I picked up my concealed carry license.  For anyone that has issue with this…well….I don’t care.  I’ve waited almost six months to make this happen.  That made it an “event” for me.  My point in this post is that it is sad that I felt a more warm and fuzzy welcome in a county sherrif’s office than in a tag agency! 🙂

And now to the last outing of the day?  Well, it’s clearly my favorite.  The BEST customer service I’ve ever received and if given the opportunity, I will do it again.  We went to our local grocery store.  I love this store.  New. Clean. Great Selection.  And guess who was right out front waiting on me when I got there?  Owasso’s own country singer, Garth Brooks.  And yes, this was my third photo of the day.  The Oklahoma kindness I am used to was found here.  And it was most certainly “My Pleasure”!

Wherever you go today, even though it IS Monday and maybe you don’t love where you are right now or what you are doing….try kindness anyway.  You could change two lives that way.  Theirs and Yours. ♥

Make New Friends ~ Keep the Old

I recall learning this little song from our elementary music teacher, Mr. Culp.

♪ ♫ ♪ “Make new friends, Keep the old, One is silver and the other gold.”  ♪ ♫♫

I also remember learning this one. “Keep your hands to yourself and your feet on the floor, Stay in line every time as you pass through the door.”  But then, this has about as much to do with the post as learning the “Pennsylvania Polka” in first grade.   which yes, I DO still sing!

Back to friends.  I had a little adventure and the wonderful pleasure of meeting up with two awesome women that I came to know through this blog.  One has even contributed a couple of times!  Thursday evening we met.  In person.  We broke bread together. (well, we broke salad and ribs and chicken!)  Two delightful sisters that were in town for a couple of days.  It was a celebration.  Someone was turning 50.  And she was not draggin’ her feet about it, either.  You see, just a few years ago, Shannon had a brain tumor.  She is a miracle.  She knows it.  And her sister, Christi?  She knows it, too.  Hence the week plus long celebration!  My heart just feels so blessed and I felt honored to join their party!

Now for the “old” friend?  Well, she is not old at all and she loves to remind me that she is younger than I and will never catch up!  Debbie and I grew up in the same town and knew “of” each other, but there it is again.  The age thing.  We were never in classes together.  And then one day, years later, our two families were brought together.  I have to think it was a “God” thing, really.  We all clicked.  Our boys, her son.  Our hubbys.  It all just worked.  And since then we have moved and moved.  They have moved and moved. Our kids are all married.  When we DO get together, we are home again Shoes kicked off, speaking our hearts, never missing a beat.  These are the friendships we can only dream of……and yet, we are living that dream.  Happy Birthday, dear friend, Debbie G.  You know I love you ♥

Silver or gold?…..friendships cannot be measured as such.  But I still like the song ~ ♥

Shooting the Moon ~

Have you ever shot the moon?  Well if you visit my folks for very long at all, you will have the opportunity.  They love to gather family and friends ’round their table for a game of dominoes.  The real challenge is Shooting the Moon.  I am not a domino player, but I did shoot the moon once.  Beginner’s luck, me thinks.

Last night, after a walk with hubby, we plopped in our old metal chair rockers on the front porch.  We hadn’t sat there long before I was being buzzed by a honey bee. at least it wasn’t a hornet! And then another.  I followed the trail and discovered their attraction.  My moon flowers .  With cooler morning and evening temps, this plant is in full bloom once again.  I had to grab my camera and “shoot” the moon flowers.  Which lead to a couple of other shots.  All from our front porch.

So happy cooler evenings to you.  And here’s to shooting the moon, wherever you may be! ♥  Go for it.  Take the risk.  It’ll be worth it. ♥  Cheers~

p.s.  While on this subject.  A terrific Oklahoma author, Billie Letts, wrote a book called, “Shoot the Moon.” I had ordered a different book through the mail, and the sender put this one in too, just because.  What a treat ~

The Bowling Ball Man

When I remember to charge my camera battery AND don’t forget to grab the sd card, I love to snap pics on our journeys to where ever.  I also (and I think this comes from living on or near Route 66 most of my life) love to watch for “novelty” signs along the way.  If there happens to be a fruit stand, a giant teepee or a winery, I must follow the crazy signs through the boonies until we find the place.  We did some of these wild goose chases last week on hubby’s time off. yes, he is a good sport about this!  Sometimes, when you chase rabbits, it can change your life for that moment.  Other times, forever.  This day ~ our chase left us in awe at the hard work and imagination of this creator.  We also laughed.  A. Lot.  And that’s what made the journey worth while ~ Kudos to Chris Barbee for sharing his art with those willing to drive that extra mile.  And to my friend Julie B, well I thought of you with every pic I snapped! 🙂  HaPPy MoNdAy!

Isabelle is an amazing and strong young lady. Isabelle is a fighter and a survivor. She is wise beyound her years. This post, by her grandmother, brings to light the importance of medical research. Had it not been for cancer research, there would not have been a cure for “Bell”. ♥♥♥

The one I wear is orange, for Leukemia, because that is what attacked my sweet granddaughter Isabelle Jade Ratclilffe a little over a year ago when she was just seven years old. The words, spoken through tears by my eldest daughter, were some that I prayed that I would never hear, “Isabelle has cancer.” That time was some of the darkest days for our family. My daughter Rebekah said it so precisely, “Christian and I have never slept so little, wept so hard, made more difficult decisions, questioned our faith so deeply, made such an effort to smile and laugh or worked so hard to keep our family together. “I Never Met a Man I Didn’t Like” ~ A Visit With Will Rogers in Oologah, Oklahoma

If you live in Oklahoma or if you have flown into or out of our airport in Oklahoma City, then may you know a little about  the “The History of Will Rogers.” I grew up wishing I’d known this man.  And every time I  hear another of his famous quotes or see his picture, I fondly think of him, just like you would an old friend.

Hubby and I had the pleasure of visiting Will Roger’s birthplace, near Oologah, Oklahoma this past weekend.  It was the weekend of the annual fly in.  Many planes and hundreds of folks turned out to celebrate Will Rogers and Wiley Post.  We even met them.  Okay, we actually met Lester Lurk and his look-alike Wiley Post sidekick.  But the resemblance was similar.  So much so, that when they got in the plane to taxi off together, I must admit that in my head I was thinking, “Guys, I don’t think I’d fly together again.”

Michael Hooper has been struggling with worry.  He is up for execution this evening. Until a few weeks ago, the state of Oklahoma had one lone dose of the execution drug pentobarbital in their possession. This is one of the three injections necessary for his demise. It is the sedative.  Hooper was concerned that if something were to go awry with this single dose during his execution, there would not be a backup.  Hooper wants to feel no pain. Really? His victims were not given that option 19 years ago.

In 1993, Michael Hooper shot Cynthia Jarman, execution style.  He then proceeded to shoot both of her young children, so that there would be no witnesses.  Tonya was five years old.  Timmy was three.  He buried them all in a shallow grave north of Oklahoma City.

The Last Walk to Execution

While I understand that the death penalty is highly controversial, I have grown up in this  boot stomping, ass-kicking, do the right thing or else, Bible thumping kind of state.  I know there are cases, before DNA testing was available, where people were wrongfully convicted and put to death.  I know that executions do not bring the victims back.  Nor do they take away the pain of those left.  I have watched the candle light vigils in the prison shadows.  I cannot help but wonder if this execution will really bring closure?

I have given much thought to this, the last day that Michael Hooper will be on earth.  Saying goodbye to loved ones.  His final chance to repent.  A meal choice.  That last long walk to his death…..hoping against hope for a phone call and one more “stay”.

Michael Hooper.  Will you now find peace from the demons within you?
