Lila Jane

Edna & Lila, cousins ~ wading through the flooded cornfields in Boswell, Oklahoma

Today I am thinking of Lila Jane. My “grandma”. (on the right) She was born on July 3, 1909. I think this may be the only childhood photo I have of her. Though the pic is old and faded, see her smile? It certainly never faded. You never left her house hungry OR empty-handed. She loved you and anyone that happened to be with you. She and Grandpa Bug raised eight pretty remarkable kids, too. They lived through some tough times. But much like the picture above, no matter how deep or murky life got, she just stepped a little higher, smiled, and moved forward. What great life lessons she has left with us.

I picture her today on a big old front porch in heaven.  But she’s not sitting around rocking.  She never did.  She is running around making sure everyone has a glass of sweet iced tea and a bowl full of ice cream. Happy Birthday, my sweet Grandma! I miss you everyday. Till we meet again~ ♥

What I Learned While Ironing

aunts mom's roseDon’t tell my daughter-in-law, but I watched Dr. Oz yesterday while I was catching up on some ironing.  Yes.  I still iron. No, my DIL isn’t “anti” Oz, she just gets weary of hearing about him from her patients and me. 😉 A few things I learned:

1. Eat an apple a day. My sister has done this forever. I really don’t like raw apples. But on the program they spoke of how good they are for your skin, plus the fiber, AND they are one of the lower in sugar fruits, so I will try harder to do this. Had one for breakfast!

2. Start each day drinking water with lemon.  A good body cleanser and kick-start for your day. I have been doing this for a while now….so yay on getting something right!

3.  Dr. Oz said if he could only choose one thing, health wise….it would be yoga. (To relax, get rid of stress, exercise, relieve headaches, back pain, etc). Recently my physical therapist had mentioned that yoga is “the best” exercise for your entire body. So I am ignoring the ugly attempt I made towards this a couple of years ago….and I am trying again.   Dr. Oz made it so easy to start.  He shared a thirty minute session on-line for us to try!  He encourages you to use your favorite tunes while doing this. Make it fun.  Make it work for you.  It worked yesterday.  We’ll see how it goes today.  Yoga with Steve Ross Session.

Hope your week is awesome ♥  Remember to breathe ~

p.s.  If you have a yoga experience, please share it!

You Got This

July 1. Yes….June did fly by as quickly as May!  So on this FIRST day of yet another new month, I am throwing out a little push for anyone that might need it. like ME! I am starting my second 30 days of a 60 day challenge for myself. I am not much on New Year resolutions. But there is  something about “the first” of any month that says to me, “You have the opportunity to start something ~ stop something ~ change something ~ learn something ~ plan something ~ write something ~ read something ~ fix something.”

So whatever just popped into your head that you were thinking about doing? Do it. Because July won’t hang around long, and when August 1st arrives, you can look back and smile.  😉

You no longer have to wait to get "around to it". I made one for us all! ;)

You no longer have to wait to get “around to it”. I made one for us all! 😉

Be nice to people.  Be nice to “you”.

A Few Favorite Recipes

I posted this tart lemonade and these happy cookies about this time last year…..thought I’d throw them out there again.  The other recipes are newbies to me. I’ve tried one and NOT YET tried one…but have plans to!  Of course….the best treat this time of year around here, is simply cutting open a big old watermelon and sprinkling on a bit of salt.  Oh yes…..On my list for the day.  😉

Strawberry Lemonade

I made this last night and hubby’s words, “This is the best drink I have ever had.”  Of course, it WAS 102 degrees out so he was hot and thirsty.  Still….see what you think:

In a blender mix:

1 can frozen lemonade or limeade

Desired amount of cleaned ripe strawberries. (I added about 8-10)

1 cup water

1 – 1 1/2 cup crushed ice (OR pour drink over ice to serve)

Blend, Pour, DRINK!  This is very refreshing and will cool you down.  Design it to your preference by adding more or less water. This lemonade is tart. If you prefer sweet, you might add sprite or sugar or a bit of honey.  Also tasty with a touch of ginger ale or your favorite “spirits”.I threw what was left in the freezer for slushies later!

Cake Mix Cookies

I made these for my hubby to share with his employees this week, since they had to work on Independence Day.  I have a sweet tooth and these cookies are super easy and yummy!

1 boxed white cake mix (I used confetti white, but I think you could use ANY flavor)

3-5 TB cooking oil (about ~ I do not “measure”)

2 eggs

1 can prepared icing (I used plain old “WHITE”, cause I love wedding cake icing!)

Preheat oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit.  Mix the first three ingredients.  If it seems too dry, you might add a smidge of water.  But not much!  Spoon onto ungreased cookie sheet using an ice cream scoop.  Do not smash down.  Bake for about 6-7 minutes or until top and edges brown a little.  Let cool for 1-2 minutes on cooling rack.  Remove and ice while still warm.  Add sprinkles (if desired) immediately.  Makes about 20 moist cookies.

Frozen Pineapple  Yum

A package of frozen pineapple (or cut a fresh one into chunks and freeze)
A cup (or so…I don’t measure!!) of almond milk (but I didn’t have any, so I used organic fat-free milk and added vanilla)
A few tablespoons of honey to sweeten.
Blend all together until it looks “whipped”. Ta-dah!!! Very refreshing!
So easy, so good.  And NO….you do not have to add coconut rum. (No photo….we devoured before I remembered to take a pic!)

Ice Cream Cake

2 cups any flavor ice cream (not non fat or low fat…good old regular ice cream). 1 1/2 cups self rising flour. Stir til moistened. Pour into greased &  floured loaf pan. Bake 350 F for 40-45 minutes.  Anxious to give this one a try!  If you try it first….let me know!

Happy Weekend!  Be nice to people ♥

“An American Story” ~ that began in Brazil (guest post)

It is no secret that I love and appreciate our American flag, our Pledge and anyone who has ever served our country.  Imagine my delight when I received this “surprise” in the mail on Saturday. yes ~ surprises are another love! an american story
I met my friend Juliana a couple of years ago at a show. I instantly bonded with her as I was drawn to her art. Her heart is as sweet as her paintings, but when I looked at this set of notecards she sent, my heart sank. You see, there is so much more to her story.

Juliana grew up with her family in a small rural community in Brazil. The following is some of what she shared with me. (used with permission)
“It was a small home, and I have so many fond memories of that place. Of the warmth of a small but loving home, of veggie gardens and playing outside in the muddy yard, of walking to my grandparents house. In 1994, when I was only fifteen, my parents moved our family to the United States. They were seeking a better education and so much more. We had to start a whole new life, along with learning a different language and a new culture. I admit, it was very difficult the first year. But even with the language barrier and culture, we made new friends at church who embraced us and welcomed us with open arms! As the years went by, we adjusted. We truly made the United States our new home and I can say today, that it would be very hard for me to go back or live anywhere else.”

Now ~ about the above print, “An American Story” ~

“I’ve always had a deep connection with little houses, I think from growing up in a small house, and feeling that warmth and embrace of family there. The colorful houses I paint represent many emotions and fond memories. Also, my Christian faith has played a great part in my art. When I’m painting I often think of how God blessed my life with a loving family growing up, and now as well, with my husband and kids in our home. He has provided for me in many ways through the years. When I don’t paint houses, I paint nature, flowers, trees, and insects. While I am aware that there is sadness and tragedies in our world, I strive to find the beauty and new life in the “everyday” that God gives us.  As an artist, I want to make a difference in someone’s life by sharing a little bit of the beauty that surrounds us.”

Juliana went on to say that as Independence Day approaches us, it reminds her of what America is about. It is a country that has embraced freedom and sacrifice.  It is a love for God and for neighbors. And it’s those same feelings that she and her family felt when they moved here, all those years ago. “An American Story” (above) represents a little bit of that. “Lives past ~the old but faithful barn. Lives that were sacrificed for the American people. And the green trees represent new life. The American flag continues to speak for itself, as it stands, firm and bright.”

Bless you, Juliana, for my wonderful gift! I am so glad to have you as my friend ♥ And thanks for taking the time to share “YOU” with us.  HAPPY INDEPENDENCE DAY !

I guess he wants phone calls?

We laughed as we watched a young man proudly writing out a phone number between the white lines for all to view.  Hmmmm….wonder if it was truly his number? A friend’s number?  A business?  I wonder if anyone called it?  Or WILL call it? 😉

A serenade for hubby

Our stroll through downtown ended on a special “note”.  I slipped the flutist a few dollars to play something special for hubby. And BOY DID HE!!! Ten minutes later we were still standing there, in the heat and wind ~ sweating, listening and smiling….while hubby asked me under his breath, “Just how many dollars did you give him?” Worth. Every. Dime. 🙂

Have a great weekend! And be nice to people. ♥

For a long time, I thought I was going crazy. I’d convinced myself that something horribly wrong was about to happen. I thought I would be stabbed, shot, or arrested every time I left my apartment. I was sure that there was an impending disaster that would melt the…
