Has Anyone Seen My Mojo?

It seems I have performed a dis-service to myself this past month.  Although I  knew it with each “bite”, this morning I let those dreaded scales confirm it.  My mojo has been laid aside and I must get it back!  I need to lose weight. Eight pounds, to be exact.  Eight may not sound like a lot….but eight quickly becomes 10, and…well….you know.  I  just don’t know if I have it in me to do it anymore!

So if you care to listen to the voices SCREAMING inside my head this morning,  here goes: I’m not a lazy person.  Not really.  I exercise.  Every. Single. Day.  I must do more. I mow and trim our lawn all summer; weed flowerbeds, pick up dog poop, clean, iron, go for walks, chase the dogs….but I must do more. I love snowcones and cherry cokes and pecan praline fudge. I can give up the fudge.  I have been shopping for a new exercise bike to help me burn more calories. Quit shopping, Paula….BUY IT. Use it!  Do more T-Tapp.  Ignore your swollen knee and push through it.  Maybe I should watch this season’s DVR’d Biggest Loser?  While I exercise.  I have a wedding to go to this weekend.  Do I dare try on my dress?

Okay. I know what to do.  Fitness. Counting Calories.  Eating more veggies. Cut servings in half. Drink more water.  I’ve been doing this stuff since I was 17 (and was first called a roly-poly).  I must find that place in my head again, that will give me the determination, motivation, and needed will-power.  I must lose my contentment.  I need stress.  I need my mojo back.

So the reason these words are here for you to read today, if you so choose and aren’t already bored outta your mind!….is for accountability.  I don’t care to share my weakness.  But if it will help me gain strength, then I am willing.  I hope I don’t regret this later.

So hide the brown sugar, baby……I’m gonna give this a try.  Again.  Anybody with me?

(and if you made it all the way to “here”….thanks so much for listening!) 😉

I’m Walking on Sunshine! (The Sunshine Award, that is ~)

Blogging is fun.  If you do it, there must be a reason you began?   Was it to share your gut with the world?  To share your photos or art?  To vent? Because it was on your bucket list?  that would be mine.   Perhaps yours is a life journey we need to follow?

While I have not been doing this very long, I have “met” some outstanding people in blog world.  My boundaries have been broadened and I wish I’d jumped in a long time ago.  Two fellow blogger friends have blessed me with the honor of the SUNSHINE Award! Thank you so very much to the sweet Shoba of Stringing Words Together and to the talented Eva of EK Photo & Art Gallery. ( and yes….the adjectives for these two are interchangeable!)  I appreciate your support in my future endeavors of which I know not of!! 😉

So now I am supposed to follow a few Sunshine Award guidelines:

1. Link the award to the person who gave it to you.

2. Answer the questions that come with it.

3. Pass it along to 10 people and let them know they have received it.

Ten (or eleven?) Awesome Bloggers Who Deserve to be Featured! (though there are MANY MORE!)

Answer Ten Questions ~

1. Favorite Color – Ugh.  This should not be difficult…but it is.  I love HOT PINK! But also black.  But nothing is more lovely than green grass and blue skies.  Sprinkle in some yellow and red tulips….okay, nevermind. I can’t decide. We shall skip this one!

2. Favorite Animal – Hubby and I have the two sweetest rescue puppies in the world,  Sugar and Baby.  We highly recommend adopting your next baby!

3. Favorite Number – I don’t really have a favorite number.  So we’ll go with 50.  It’s a good number for starting over ~

4. Favorite Non-Alcoholic Drink – Sonic Happy Hour Cherry Coke with extra cherry syrup!  But I drink un-sweet iced tea all day long ~

5. Facebook or Twitter – Facebook….but only because I’ve not yet learned to tweet.  (Is that proper twittology?)  Tutorials welcome!

6. My Passion – Seeing people treated with kindness/fairness. Standing up for them.  Reading. Writing.  Learning photography. Determining my purpose in life.

7. Giving or Receiving – Definitely Giving.  I do not receive well.  I never feel deserving.  But my desire is to help those who truly need it.

8. Favorite Pattern – Well….I will have to think on that one.  Maybe dollar signs! 😉

9. Favorite Day of the Week – Any day my hubby is off from work.  Sundays are amazing, though ~

10. Favorite Flower – I love wildflowers.  And tulips in the spring.  Roses as a surprise.  Mums in the fall.  How can you choose just one?!

Happy Day to each of you.  Remember to be nice to others.  You never know what they may be dealing with today ~ ♥

Take a Walk in His Shoes ~

If you had one wish, what would it be?

About every three months, hubby and I go to the shoe department of J.C. Penney’s and purchase a new pair of Docker’s Glacier, size 11 work shoes.  It’s a ritual.  We go home, place the new receipt in the new box.  Toss the old shoes and the old box.  Place new inserts in the new shoes.  Hubby is good to go for a few more months.

Last night he brought one of each shoe in and we studied them for a bit.  I grabbed my camera for documentation.  Can you even imagine how many miles are on these shoes?  My hubby is a retail manager for Hobby Lobby.  He has worked for them for many years.  People who do not know retail may think he has a cushy job.  Study. These. Shoes.

He left this morning around 6:30.  I will see him this evening around 9:30.  (But he does have normal short days.  Those would be the ten-hour days.) During November and December, the hours increase and they move to a required six-day work week to better serve the customer.  Last year I bought him a pedometer to wear for the crazy Thanksgiving weekend.  His highest mileage day was around 25 miles. An average day is 18.  I  think we were both better off not knowing.

I spoke with a young man yesterday who is running for Congress.  He asked what issues we would want addressed in government.  Hubby and he spoke of taxes, 2nd amendment laws, social security, and monies spent frivolously.  I spoke of labor laws.  Capping hours on salaried personnel so that they are either compensated or have regulated hours.

Hubby does not complain. He loves working with people and is good at what he does. He and many others like him, just do it.  Everyday.  And when the tread on the shoes gets thin,  off to the store to replace them….again.

And this is why I need to win the lottery. ♥

My friend over at Airports Made Simple, blogged this a while back. It really stuck with me. Maybe because we have two little “pups” that rescued us? (lowered hubby’s blood pressure, makes us laugh a lot) Maybe because my son works in a prison….and we get how one weak moment (that ANY of us could have)can change your life forever. I don’t know. Read this and let me know what you think….♥

Visiting Small Town America ~ Grove, Oklahoma

Hubby and I took a mini-trip over the weekend; our final destination being The Cherokee Queen for an evening cruise on Grand Lake.  Of course, we did take the long route, first stopping at The Amish Cheese House for a late, but yummy lunch.  Then after some winding scenic back roads, we arrived in Grove, Oklahoma.  Want some summer lake fun?  Come to Grove! We stayed here when our boys were very young.  A well-kept place and perfect if you wanna fish and let the kids romp and play….(but give me the Holiday Inn Express) ~A fun and friendly place to shop ~Yep ~ I found another chair!  This one for my front porch! It was finally time to board the Cherokee Queen! Be sure to call ahead and make reservations.  You have a choice of a dinner cruise or just a sightseeing tour.  From visiting with some of the employees, we learned that they are in transition to new owners this season. The upper air conditioning was on the blink, but once we got rolling, it didn’t matter.  The cool air from the water was perfect.  Their new liquor license is in the hands of the “state”, so don’t whine I’m talking to me  about “no wine”.  They are “in waiting”.  😉 We loved the two-hour excursion and visiting with other folks on our adventure. (all ages!)  The photo ops were amazing….but be sure your battery has a full charge! like I should have done ~ duh   The captain did a great job, and we appreciated their music selection for the evening.  Perhaps you are like us ~ a little sunset cruise and relaxing is good for the soul ~well then, check it out if you are in this area of Oklahoma.  We would do it again, for sure! And THIS IS WHEN MY CAMERA BATTERY DIED! But that’s okay.  Cause looking at this world without the lens is pretty amazing, too ~

HaPpY FrIdAy ♥ (OH!  And it is JUNE today!  So a big old SHOUT OUT to INOLA, OKLAHOMA!  Their Hay Days Celebration is later on this month.  Check it out!  Friendly folks live there ♥)

In Flanders Fields ~

In Flanders fields  the poppies blow, Between the crosses, row on row,

That mark our place; and in the sky, The larks, still bravely singing, fly

Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead.  Short days ago,  We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,

Loved and were loved, and now we lie,

In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:  To you from failing hands we throw

The torch; be yours to hold it high.

If ye break faith with us who die, We shall not sleep,

though poppies grow,

in Flanders Fields ~

Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae was inspired to write this poem on May 3, 1915 (Click on the link above to learn more of this inspiring account.)

We drove through our local cemetery on Memorial Day and were touched by this display of honor and remembrance.  Lest we Forget ~

Thirty Years Later ~( Happy Anniversary)

This weekend is a pretty big milestone for my hubby and I.  When you are twenty-two years old and crazy in love and excited about the future…..well….let’s face it…you don’t really think that much about said future.  Oh sure you DO think about ~ buying houses and cars and furniture and vacuum cleaners and having babies and puppies and careers….but who really thinks, “Hmmmm….wonder where we’ll be in thirty years?”  But here we are….thirty years later.  A lot has happened.  MANY houses, states, moves, cars, furniture, babies, puppies, careers, ha~vacuums (!)….but none of it was exactly as we thought it would be.  I wasn’t always content…..neither was hubby.  If you are gasping and thinking, “I cannot believe she is saying this! What an anniversary tribute!” well then, you don’t really know me yet, or you haven’t been married long. 😉  A person doesn’t just wake up everyday, “happy”.  It’s a process….a mindset. A decision. And there are days that are sad and maddening or just plain gloomy.  Days you don’t wanna be you.   Days you don’t know who your partner is anymore! And most certainly, moments flash in your brain when you recall that someone once told you, “And you are marrying his family, too”.

But we never believed that our commitment to each other was disposable.  Even during the toughest of times, somehow we held on and stumbled through it.  We have had MANY really great moments.  And now, we try to laugh…and laugh a LOT! (our therapy!)

I tell my own married children that all marriages must be worked on daily.  There can be no complacency.  You will either grow closer together or slip farther away from each other. Period.  You cannot mark time.  I’ve been in both places.

But enough with all of this reminicsing…..it is very difficult to find a “Hallmark card” for your spouse that can sum up thirty years.  I searched for one this week that would say, ‘We met, dated about two weeks, decided to get married, had little money or real plans, had some kids, they are grown, and here we are. I preferred it be written in an eloquent way, too! 😉 Plus, it needed to cover all the other “stuff”.  There is SOOO much in-between!

And to those acquaintances that said  we would never make it in our whirlwind relationship …..well, we did.  And we are.  Cause, somehow, out of all the guys out there, I picked the one that would: laugh at my jokes; take me to concerts he doesn’t  really like; (he slept thru a few!)listen to my made-up songs; hold me when I cry; leave me alone when I wanna be; teach me to dance; travel with me and eat at “dives“; respect me; go to garage sales; love my family most of them; be a nurturing & kind father  & provider; squish spiders; edge the yard; take me for snowcones and cherry cokes at Sonic; let me think I’m a better shot than him at the range ~ you just love me ~ I guess that pretty much makes you my hero, Marvin Blaxton.  I love you, too.  Happy 30th Anniversary

Memorial Day ~ An Observation

I recall when I was growing up that there was something extra special about Memorial Day.  While I wasn’t exactly certain why it was special, I would observe my dad, a United States Air Force Veteran, placing his American Flag outside our home at the start of this weekend.  I knew from simply observing, it was a day to be revered.  I grew up listening to his stories. I never tired hearing about the country”boy” that joined the armed forces at age seventeen. He did indeed see the world.  New York, France, Germany. He returned home a responsible, determined, and respectful young man.

Fast forward many years.  I married the love of my life.  I also married a man whose father was retired military, and whose big brother was a Lieutenant Colonel in the Air Force.  The respect and the patriotism I’d grown up with, lived in this household, too.   Sadly, we lost hubby’s brother a few years ago.  He now rests at Arlington Cemetary.  Never does a day pass that we don’t think about Eldon or talk about him. But we do know he’s in very good company.

Don’t forget to pause this Memorial Day weekend and remember it for what it was intended.  Our lake adventures and time spent with friends and family is there only because of these men and women that committed and sacrificed to serve for us. Let’s not take that gift for granted.  Remember. Teach your children and grandchildren. Thank a Veteran.  Thank their family.  Be Respectful ~

And I cannot end this post without saying my own sincere Thank You to our veterans and to their families.  Words are not enough….but they are from my heart ♥ And as Colonel Blaxton would say ~ “Life is short, Peace is Sweet.”    Indeed.

My Dad ~ Garland L. SimsJoplin, Missouri ~ though tattered in the storm, the Flag was still there ~
