Last Will and Testament or Trust?

During my pregnancy with our first son, my husband and I determined that we needed a will.  Our main concern at the time was the well-being of this child, and any future children be taken care of, “in the event of”.  Fast forward many years.  Our needs had changed, as had our state of residence. Now there was only one child left at home, so we updated our will and guardianship.  Today we are empty nesters AND living in a different state again. We knew our needs were different, however, we weren’t sure what changes needed to be made.  Trust or Will? Advance Health Care Directive? Power of Attorney?  That’s when I located Ms. Kacie Cresswell, a local attorney.  She was able to answer all of our questions and make the process as easy as possible.

Please note, this information is for the state of Oklahoma.  The regulations in your state may differ, so please contact an attorney from your area to assist with your state requirements. My point in this post is to instill an URGENCY in you to get your house in order, if you have not already done so.  A good time to do this is while you are in good health, a good state of mind and while you are not under time pressures.  Think about it ~ Paula ♥ And a big THANKS to Kacie Cresswell for her help!!!

From Today’s Contributor:  Kacie Cresswell

“Many different tools exist to assist clients in planning for the future.  Clients often opt for a will, trust, durable power of attorney, advanced health care directive, or some combination.”

About a WILL:

“A will is a great tool for anyone, whether you are wealthy or not.  If you have a will you can choose your own personal representative to take care of your estate once you are gone.  If you designate a personal representative in a will, the court may not require a bond when a probate is filed. ”

“Also, within a will, you can appoint guardians for your children.  If you die without a will, the Court will appoint guardians, who may or may not be your choice, for your children.”

“If you die without a will or trust, Oklahoma will basically write one for you.  Oklahoma law defines who is an heir and who is not.  If you have a stepchild or step-grandchild for example, they would not be an heir.  If you wish for them to inherit, you will need to specifically designate that in a will.”

“A will is a great tool to provide evidence of what exactly your wishes are.  However, a probate will probably be necessary to distribute the estate, such as a house.  While a will is often less expensive than a trust, the cost of probate often exceeds the cost of a trust.  A will only comes into play upon death.  A trust, however, can become effective upon illness or incapacity. ”

About a TRUST:

“A trust is another great tool for estate planning.  The main advantage of a trust is avoiding probate, which can cost thousands of dollars and take years.  Privacy is another advantage of a trust because the court does not get involved. ”

“A trust allows you to manage your own estate and affairs until you are unable or have passed away.  Within the trust, you are able to appoint a successor trustee.  Whenever the time comes (through death or incapacity), management of your estate is basically handed over to the successor trustee to manage as you have provided within the trust.”

Get Your Kicks on Route 66 and No Man’s Land !

My hubby and I love to go on long drives.  With no destination in mind, we will just grab drinks and the camera and off we will go.  Last April, we decided to do this for a week.  Our wonderful house/dog sitter came to stay with our pups, and we loaded up and headed west.  It was time we checked out Route 66.  We did not come back Route 66, however….Paula (that’s me) came up with the idea somewhere in New Mexico, that we should angle up and drive the entire Oklahoma Panhandle. I wanted to cover No Man’s Land from the very edge.  And we did.  We even met a car on a couple of occasions, approximately 100 miles apart!   I snapped pics of THAT!  It was a great time of exploring, seeing new sights, eating delightful food, and meeting new people. Here are some pics of our journey.  Have a Wonderful Monday and be nice to each other!

I had never seen fields of canola until this trip.  Beautiful ~

Shamrock, Texas

Well, yes we DID take that exit! Yum!

Palo Dura Canyon, Texas

Tucumcari, New Mexico.  Hubby convinced me that in order for this to be a true Route 66 experience, we needed to spend one night in an authentic Route 66 motel.  The owner was a delight and we did have a pleasant old-fashioned visit with the other (2) guests staying there that evening.  But as for the night’s sleep, well, hubby owed me a Hilton visit after this one!

This was the garage that connected to our room.  This motel was featured in the movie, “CARS”.

Las Vegas, New Mexico was a quaint little town with unique shops and friendly people.  We ate lunch here on the recommendation of a local.  We wanted to hang around for supper, too.  The best Mexican food EVER!  (and bakery)

We drove into the edge of Colorado (no longer on Route 66!) and because of this view, determined our September trip would be here.

Now heading back into New Mexico and towards the Oklahoma Panhandle, we mostly drove on open range.  No phone service, bathrooms, gas stations or anything!  Cows, antelope, jack rabbits, ranches….

But look what I had hidden in the backseat from the previous day!  Carrot cake from Charlie’s in Las Vegas.  Good thing, as it was lunch! (and yes, I did share~)

The Black Mesa!!

And many miles of this……………we were so thrilled to finally reach Guyman, Oklahoma & SONIC!

We spent the night with our kiddos in Enid, Oklahoma. I think they’d lived in Enid about a week at this time.

The next morning we set out to locate the house I’d lived in as a child (age three) in Enid.  And here it is! This is the house where I was chased by butterflies…and leaves…and my sister STILL laughs about that!

This was our Welcome Home~  More long drives to come…..

Junie B Jones and some Sneaky Peeky Spying ~

A few years ago, I decided to venture out and take a Children’s Literature writing class.  I was amazed at the many “new to me” authors that had entered this world since my kids were young.  My boys and I practically lived at our Newcastle, Oklahoma library.  If the book we needed wasn’t there, the librarians always ordered it in for us!  So when many of my assignments in this new class were to go to book stores and spend time at the library, I felt right at home.

An author I found to be my favorite, during this class, was Barbara Park.  She is the author of the  June B. Jones  series.  During some of my studies on Ms. Park, I learned that her books were considered controversial because they were written to sound like a child speaking.  Meaning, grammar, syntax, spelling, etc, is not always correct.  Some educators prefer young children to learn by reading grammatically correct works.  What I learned from reading these books, is HOW MUCH I LOVED reading them!  I checked out the maximum the library would allow, took them home and read them to my college son (at the time) and to my husband.  If you haven’t read any June B. Jones Books….check them out!  I really think they’ll lower your blood pressure, but I know they’ll make you LaUgH a LoT!

Here’s an excerpt from a chapter from “June B. Jones and some Sneaky Peeky Spying” by Barbara Park.

“My name is Junie B. Jones.  The B stands for Beatrice.  Except I don’t like Beatrice.  I just like B and that’s all.

I go to kindergarten.  Kindergarten is what comes before first grade.  Except for I don’t know why it’s called that silly word of kindergarten. ‘Cause it should be called zero grade, I think.

My teacher has the name of Mrs.  She has another name, too.  But I just like Mrs. and that’s all.  Mrs. has short brown hair.  And long skirts of wool.  And she smiles a real lot.  Except for sometimes when I’m noisy, she claps her loud hands at me.  It used to scare me very much.  Only then I got used to it.  And now I don’t even pay it any attention.  I wish Mrs. lived next door to me.  Then me and her would be neighbors.  And bestest friends.  And also I could spy on her.

Spying is when you be very quiet.  And you look at people through a peeky hole or a crack or something.  I am a good spier.  That’s because I have sneaky feet.  And my nose doesn’t whistle when I breathe.

Last Friday morning at Grampa Miller’s house, I hided in the dirty clothes hamper.  Then my grampa came in the bathroom.  And I lifted up the lid a teeny bit.  And I peeked my eyes at him.  And guess what?  Grampa Miller took his whole teeth right out of his head!  That’s what!  I popped right out of the hamper. “HEY GRAMPA!  HOW DID YOU DO THAT CRAZY THING!” I hollered.

Pretty soon Mother hurried into the bathroom with angry feet.  “That’s it!” she yelled. “No more spying!  This is the last time I’m telling you!  Do you hear me, missy? Do you?”      “Yes,” I said.  “Cause you’re hollering right in my ear, that’s why.”

Then Mother took me home.  Except for she kept on staying mad at me. ”

So what are YOUR favorite children’s books?  Please share the title or maybe a few favorite lines.  (Anyone else love “Oh, The Places You’ll Go?)

HaPPy Saturday! OH and I almost forgot!  Stuff I Tell My Sister is two months old today! Which means, since I started this on my sister’s birthday, that she is 662 months old today!  How ’bout that, Renae!  😉  Please share us with your friends and ask them to  “LIKE” our page on Facebook!  We’d be much obliged!

The Good, The Bad and The Ugly ~ Breaking Family Traditions

This evening I was cleaning up the kitchen after dinner. I folded a piece of foil that hadn’t been used and tucked it back into the “foil and baggies” drawer. I thought to myself, “Now, why didn’t you simply throw that away?”  And then I quickly answered that question, “Because Mom taught me to be frugal and I will probably use it tomorrow.”  I looked at my now clean kitchen, with most everything in its place, and thought how it was this way because this was the way Mom did it.

Several years ago when the boys were still at home, my niece, Shelby, was staying at our house.  We were all gathered in the kitchen and I was baking something and cracking eggs to go into the recipe.  As I cracked each egg, I would place the eggshell back into the egg carton before  moving on to the next egg.  I then heard the following conversation between the kids, which at the time, really made me giggle.  Shelby ~ “Oh my gosh, your mom does the same thing with the eggshells that my mom does!”  The boys ~ “Yep, she’s always done that”.  Then to me, “Why do you do that?!” and my answer?  “Mom always did this.  She would save the eggshells and use them as fertilizer in plants and in the garden.” ( Of course the really funny thing was that we didn’t have a garden at that time or any live plants!!!)

Another favorite story that I read once to my family was about the Easter ham a lady made for her family each year.  This one particular year, as she prepared the ham, her mom AND children were all present.  She took her ham, cut one end off, as she always did and placed it in the pan.  One of her daughters asked her, “Mom, why do you always cut the end of the ham off before you bake it?” She said something to the effect of it allowing extra flavor in, etc, plus it’s just what her mom has always done.  The grandmother, still in the kitchen, looked at them all and then replied, “I cut the end of the ham off so it would fit in the pan.”

Where am I going with this?  I don’t know.  Maybe I want to make sure that you know that tradition can be good. But it can also be silly, wrong or even evil.  I also believe each generation should begin their own new traditions while preserving some of  those they’ve cherished from growing up.  Sometimes traditions are used as a control or guilt factor.  Be careful not to allow yourself to be drawn into that game.

One last little story.  I know a man who grew up the youngest in a household.  His family moved often, they didn’t have a lot of money because any extra that came in went to “the church” or to pay the church budget.  This and many other struggles created constant pressure, unhappiness and even fear, in their home.  When the dad was stressed to the max, if the younger boys were around, it was taken out on them.  They were punished for his bad day. He would have these boys take off their shoes and kick the wall with their little bare feet until their toes would bleed and then, kick it some more.  Their mom would beg him to stop, but he didn’t, and she was too fearful of him to stop it herself.  This would happen over and over.

This young boy is grown now. His dad has been gone for many years. He hasn’t forgotten this abuse in his life.  But when his first child was born, he made a conscious decision that this would NOT be a tradition or act carried on in his household.  It had to stop and it would stop with him.

Carry on the good traditions people, but put a stop to the wrong.  Don’t live a lie.  Ask for help.  Step up.  Speak up.  The bad can stop with you.

The Farmer’s Market

My hubby and I drove to Oklahoma City a few weeks ago to visit my parents and the OSU/OKC Farmer’s Market.  This market is unique for a “cooler” state, in that it is open year round.  We were reminded while we were there that Spring is in the air and it will not be long before ALL of the markets will be up and running!  Great products, friendly vendors, and a festive atmosphere.  It’s a great way to spend your Saturday morning! Easy & Delicious Low Cal Fried Chicken & Potato

WHEN I cook, I like to cook healthy.  I could be a vegetarian, but not my hubby and not my sons when they visit.  Here is a simple “fried” chicken recipe that is easy and low-calorie. (But the guys don’t know that low cal part, so ssshhhhhh)

Place desired number of boneless, skinless chicken breasts in skillet sprayed with olive oil cooking spray.  I buy chicken that has no antibiotics and is hormone free.  Season chicken with sea salt, a little garlic powder, Mrs. Dash (if desired), and the biggy for me is to blacken it with black pepper.

Brown on medium heat and then turn, season and brown the other side.

Reduce heat to medium low, so that the inside is good and cooked.  You are going for a crispy brown that will crunch like a breading, yet there’s no breading!  There are no calories in the your olive oil spray or in the seasonings. The chicken has about 30 calories per ounce of meat.

                                                               Easy “Fried” Chicken

I tried a baked potato from the Pinterest a week or so ago.  With the butter and olive oil as they directed, my house smelled like a deli at a grocery store and it lingered. (YUCK) My sister-in-law, Mary, said she just used olive oil cooking spray on hers, so the following is a “modification” of a crunchy baked potato.

Preheat oven to 400 degrees (F).  Place potato on cutting board and slice thinly, but do not slice completely through the bottom.  Place on baking pan.

Spray with olive oil cooking spray AND butter flavor cooking spray.  Then sprinkle with desired spices.  I used sea salt, LOTS of black pepper and garlic powder.  Bake for about 35-40 minutes, until potato slices are fork tender.  At this point, calories of the a large potato are approximately 275.  If you want to keep it low cal, just be cautious on adding any toppings.  I served a light ranch on the side, but my husband just wanted ketchup.  You could sprinkle with cheese and add bacon bits if you like.

                                                         Crunchy Baked Potato

Now all you need to do is throw a salad together or just slice some veggies and you have a pretty easy and very low cal meal. And it really is yummy!  Let me know if you try either one!  Happy Wednesday!

Looking for a Calm on Super Tuesday

This was not the planned post for today.  But as I started thinking last night, about Super Tuesday  voting in Oklahoma, my stomach began to churn at the chaos and uncertainty of our government and world.  I started thinking about my personal responsiblity to do my research on candidates and to vote against outside pressures.  It is certainly difficult to tune out the media and the negative commercials.  I started searching for a calm!  I then started thinking about some of the old hymns I sang in church as a kid.  Perhaps if they sang a few of these during Congress sessions, it might make a difference in their lives and ours.

I will not tell you how to vote.  I know I don’t have the answers.  I do have reference to some great songs though, and I will be go to the polls singing. ♪ ♫ ♪  Click below to listen ~
