In the Backyard….and Other Stuff~

When our kids were younger and we traveled from Arkansas (and later Missouri) to see Nana and Papa, when we would come to this wide spot in the road, they would get extra excited.  “The Split”, as we named it, meant we were finally in Oklahoma City, and just minutes away from seeing Nana and Papa.  Hubby and I did this drive on my birthday last week, I couldn’t resist the blurry shot through the window.  It brings many good memories of little boys now grown up, and almost being there ~

Another window shot of the big ferris wheel at Frontier City.

Hubby got me a new zoom lens for my birthday….Look at what it can do!  yay!

After lunch with my folks, we “played” in the backyard.  I think the message for this blog is that even if you cannot travel far, there is much to enjoy right where you are!

These little guys where EVERYWHERE!From this……To THIS!!!In the front yard ~Always a ham in the house ~ 😉

Enjoy where you are ~ and be nice to people.  You never know what they may be going through ~ ♥

Visiting Small Town America ~ Lampe, Missouri (and post #100!)

Last week was one of relaxation and pure pleasure.  How often do you get to say that?  I know, not very often.  My hubby was off for a week and we met my sister and her hubby,  a few miles south of Branson, Missouri.  On Monday, we found ourselves headed for Lampe, Missouri. Not TOO far out of Branson, but far enough to be “away” from it all.  Our destination was Dogwood Canyon Nature Park.  Fortunately, we took a little detour and ended up at The Corner Drive-In, in Lampe.  (pronounced, LAMPEY – I had to ask!)

This drive-in is that old-fashioned kind.  Remember standing outside the sliding window and leaning over to place your order?  Remember that perfectly slivered ice?  And leaning over to give your order to the friendly guy that owns the place?  Yep, that’s where we were.  Right on the corner under a big old tree ~

After our scrumptious lunch, we backtracked and located Dogwood Canyon.  We knew it was supposed to be big and a canyon.  That’s pretty much all we knew!  The signage made it a bit difficult to find, but once we located it, it did not disappoint!

We curved around until we came to the main building where there was a tram sitting out front.  We went in to find out they were leaving RIGHT THEN!  So the guys hurried and paid and secured out seats in the open air trailor….and with passengers from all over the United States and a VERY fun and informed guide, we began our two-hour excursion.

The guide stopped many times along the way for us to “play”, take pics, and feed the trout.  Oh….no striper fishing here! 😉

Dogwood offers many unique ways to explore their over 10,000 acres.  Segway tour, horseback riding, jeep tour, bike rentals and of course, you can walk!  You can even take a two-day fly fishing class or have a wedding! (www.dogwoodcanyon.org)

After our tour, we did a little INTENTIONAL backtracking and went to see Roger again, in Lampe.  Sister, Renae and I, had noticed they sold waffle twist cones when we were there for lunch, and it took very little convincing to get the guys to return.  As we sat in the car looking at the menu, I suggested we just sit there til we were hungry again. Then we could eat supper there too!  ( I was the only one game for this!)

Hope you guys had a great week ~ I missed you! ♥♥♥

A tornado hit the area of Oklahoma City where my folks lived the day I was born.  It actually did some pretty major damage to our house and they brought me home from the hospital to live in a kitchenette motel for a few weeks while repairs were made.  Welcome to this world, Paula ~  I’m sure it was very stressful for my parents….but for me, well….I don’t recall a thing ! 🙂  (But love the stories!)

I have been celebrating my birthday all week long with different family members. Today, I will have lunch with my mom and dad and hubby.  So HaPpY BiRtHdAy to me!  I’m not gonna ignore it, because I appreciate each and every year that I meet! So birthdays?  I say, bring em on!

I  truly appreciate you guys so much.  Thanks for reading and sharing, “Stuff I Tell My Sister”.  If you don’t mind, I’d like to ask for TWO favors today.

Honoring Heroes ~ Oklahoma Honor Flights

We can’t all be Heroes.  Some of us have to stand on the curb and clap as they go by.”  Will Rogers ~ My hubby and I  had the honor, along with hundreds of others, to be in the “Welcome Home” crowd for a group Oklahoma WW II Veterans on Thursday evening.  All were gathered in the terminal at the Tulsa Airport.

Oklahoma Honor Flights is a non-profit group whose mission is “Honoring Oklahoma Veterans”.  Their actual mission statement is: “Transport Oklahoma Veterans to Washington D.C. to visit those memorials dedicated to honor their service and sacrifices.”

The Veterans and volunteers had met that morning at 4:30, boarded their chartered plane to Washington D.C., and now here we were waiting at 9:30 that evening for their return.  How exhausted they had to be.  But this was a trip of a lifetime.  There would be no complaining ~We met some dedicated and loving people at the airport that evening.  The daughter of Richard Biedermann, Navy, Lt., explained that her father had helped organize the committee for the Tulsa flights to begin.  He was 88 years old and was able to raise over $16,000 in just four weeks.  Sadly, He was never able to make the flight, so in memory of him, his brother Len Biedermann, was on this trip.

There were dozens of Patriot Guards and Oklahoma Honor Flight’s Ground Crew. Even a band from a local Tulsa homeschool group, entertained with patriotic tunes.  Mary stood next to us.  Her sweet mother was in a wheelchair and was there to welcome her husband of 63 years home from this flight.  She clutched her flag in her hands and waited.

The feeling in the airport was festive.  Young and old gathered together, flags waving, music playing, all to welcome home our heroes. The lines on each side of the wall grew longer by the minute,  extending from the gate to the airport’s front entrance.  When the announcement was made that the plane had landed, the crowd exploded into cheers.  And then finally, after a lengthy wait, the parade began.  One by one.  Each escorted by a volunteer.  I was so excited to take pictures!  But then I saw the first Veteran’s face, so surprised with the homecoming, tears streaming down his face….my hand was reaching out to touch his.  He needed to know how much I appreciated his service to our country. As he squeezed my hand, there was so much I wanted to tell him.   And then the next, and the next Veteran…..then my brain said “PICTURES!”  So I did take many photos,  I didn’t even realize that tears were streaming down my face too, until my blurry camera lens showed evidence. The emotion was overwhelming.  So these pics are for you, friends.  And they are for me.  Please know that they are from my heart.  But the imperfections are present because, well ~I had heroes to greet.  Over One Hundred ~

A special thankyou to ALL Veterans for your service and sacrifice.  And to www.OklahomaHonorFlights.org .  My words cannot begin to express the gratitude in my heart ♥

The Survivor Tree ~ Remembering April 19, 1995

Today should probably be a silent day, out of honor and respect to each person lost and so many touched by the terrorism that occurred in the heartland of Oklahoma.  April 19, 1995.  I have no words of wisdom.  There is nothing I can say that hasn’t already been said.  It is simply a day of reflection. Of grieving hearts. Of questions that will never be answered.

My thoughts now go to the tree.  The Survivor Tree.  An old elm in downtown Oklahoma City. It witnessed everything.  It endured the blast.  And because of the love and care from those who surrounded it, it still stands tall. Kinda like Oklahoma. ♥

Witness to Tragedy, Survivor Tree:   Symbol of Strength

(from www.OklahomaCityNationalMemorial.org)

“It is more than 80 years old. An American Elm Tree in the heart of downtown Oklahoma City, it survived the bomb’s blast and witnessed one of the worst terrorist attacks on American soil. Today, we call it the Survivor Tree.

Before the bombing, the tree was important because it provided the only shade in the downtown parking lot. People would arrive early to work just to be able to park under the shade of the tree’s branches.

On April 19, 1995, the tree was almost chopped down to recover pieces of evidences that hung from its branches due to the force of the 4,000 pound bomb that killed 168 and injured hundreds just yards away. Evidence was retrieved from the branches and the trunk of the tree.

When hundreds of community citizens, family members of those who were killed, survivors and rescue workers came together to write the Memorial Mission Statement, one of its resolutions dictated that “one of the components of the Memorial must be the Survivor Tree located on the south half of the Journal Record Building block.”

The Memorial design was unveiled in 1996 with a prominence put on this ancient elm.

The final Memorial design included this important promontory. Because the roots of the tree ran so deep, the promontory was put on piers so that there would be no damage to the tree’s root system. Each pier was hand dug by Bays and the construction crew. The design also included an aeration and irrigation system underneath the promontory, which permits the air and water to get underneath the tree’s roots. This state of the art system allows the tree to receive the appropriate amount of water and air to keep it growing for years to come.

Cuttings of the Survivor Tree are growing in nurseries all over Oklahoma. Owners of landscape nurseries, arborists, urban foresters and expert horticulturists from across the state and country have come together to work and preserve this piece of history. None of these people have ever charged the Memorial for their work. Each year, the Facilities and Grounds crew at the Memorial provides Bays and the nursery men hundreds of seeds. They plant the seeds and distribute the resulting saplings each year on the anniversary of the bombing. Today, thousands of Survivor Trees are growing in public and private places all over the United States.

“The Memorial is grateful to Mark Bays, and the Oklahoma Department of Agriculture, Food and Forestry for their long-standing commitment to the Survivor Tree,” said Kari Watkins, Executive Director of the Oklahoma City National Memorial. “The tree is a beautiful symbol today thanks to Mark’s work and those he has reached out to across the state, who take seeds and return tree saplings the following spring.”

The Survivor Tree is a symbol of human resilience. Today, as a tribute to renewal and rebirth, the inscription around the tree reads, “The spirit of this city and this nation will not be defeated; our deeply rooted faith sustains us.” “

Be nice to each other,  friends, we never know what the other may be going through ~ ♥

Visiting Small Town America ~ Vinita, Oklahoma

Not too many miles down the road from us, on Route 66, is the great town of Vinita, Oklahoma.  My husband had some business there on Saturday morning, PLUS we were “storm watching”, but we knew we could work in some fun.

First stop was Summerside Winery. (https://www.facebook.com/#!/summersidewinery) At Summerside, the people are friendly, the tours interesting, and the wine tasting is very enlightening and yummy. (Have you ever tried Mead? Wine made from honey)  Summerside comes complete with an intimate tea room.  We love to visit in the summertime, too.  Many times they have live music in the courtyard.  Check it out! And be sure and sample the raspberry and the blackberry ~ my faves!

Continuing on Route 66 is Clantons Cafe. Clanton’s is owned by Dennis and Melissa (Clanton) Patrick.  They are fourth generation operators as this cafe has been in Vinita since 1927! (then called ~ Busy Bee)  And busy they were, but that did not stop the friendly.  Here we were “strangers” in town, and we were visiting with the locals like it was home.  Clanton’s has been featured on Diner’s, Drive-In’s and Dives, and are famous for their Calf Fries, Chicken Fried Steak and Chicken ‘n Dressing.  And then there is the pie….Chocolate, Coconut or Lemon. The Coconut jumped in a sack to go home with us. Miraculously, it made it, too!  (www.clantonscafe.com)

If the chicken ‘n dressing is good enough for Brooks and Dunn, it’s even better for me!  Many choices for your side dishes, but we tried the baked squash….yum!  Soup or salad, homemade rolls…see why the pie had to wait?

It comes natural to Mr. Patrick to make everyone feel at home. (I couldn’t for the life of me take a pic this day with eyes open…apologies….but look at that great SMILE!)  The servers took after his great example.

So there you go friends! I have planned a full day for you!  Summerside Winery, Antiquing, Clanton’s…..Eat, Sip, Shop and be MERRY!  We will do this again!

(One more thing I must share about Vinita.  Many years ago when we still lived in Joplin, MO, we were in route for an anniversary weekend to Tulsa, Oklahoma, when are car went crazy.  It needed a new alternator and it was a Saturday morning.  We coasted into the closest town, Vinita. Sitting at Wal-mart, an older gentleman stopped to help us. He directed us across the road to a car dealership.  This manager had no mechanics on duty, but GAVE my husband the shop and access to tools to help him.  We ended up with a part from O’Reilly’s and the gentlemen at O’Reilly’s gave us all the tools and help galore.  On down the road we went.  But we will never forget the kindness of SO MANY STRANGERS that day.  The people of Vinita, Oklahoma have our hearts forever! ♥)

Be nice to people, folks ♥

And Why Should I Trust You? ~ A Post from “The Other Sister”

Today’s post is from the Mississippi sister, Renae.  Please jump in with your feedback….unfortunately, this has happened to many of us ~

So it’s Friday the 13th…… for me it’s really the kind of day to joke about and have a little fun. I’m just not the superstitious type. My day was planned: showing property to clients; lunch with my hubby; then off to a closing…..really, could Friday the 13th get any better than this??

Just as I was about to wrap up the morning of looking at properties, what do I hear??…..the familiar, but dreaded sound of something in my tire….I had picked up a screw while out. My tire wasn’t losing air, yet, but I knew I had better get it taken care of as quickly as possible. Since I wasn’t near my regular car care store, I popped into the first one I ran across. All I needed was a tire repair. It seemed like such a simple thing at the time.

After providing my info, off goes my car into the bay for repair. In short order, I am asked to come back and take a look at my car. Sadly, the tire could not be repaired. Not only did the damaged tire need replaced, but all FOUR tires….oh and “Your brakes are bad!!” and “You need new rotors and brakepads”, I’m told.

It crossed my mind about this time that maybe there was something to this Friday the 13th. I asked the manager if the rotors could be turned? And this is the moment I knew that something was not right.  There was a “deer in the head-lights” look on his face while he paused; then looked at me, and answered, “No”.

Now I don’t fully understand all the mechanical attachments to turning the rotors, but I know it is possible and if “no” was indeed the answer, it should come with an explanation. There was no explanation, but instead an estimate of $1,770.  Along with the estimate, came a very eager and encouraging manager, wanting me to take care of this immediately.

I decided to give the folks at Ultimate Tire Care a call.  This is the place I have gone for years. They assured me they could repair my tire and it would be free of charge since I purchased my tires there. They also gave me a quote for the same tires, at $150 less than the first guy (and his were on sale ~yeah right!)  My hunch was correct.

Thank goodness for honest businesses! Ultimate Tire Care not only took care of the repair to my damaged tire with lightning speed, (which the other guy said could not be repaired) but also told me I only needed to replace TWO tires, not all four. Upon further investigation, it turned out my brakes were good. I did NOT need rotors or brake pads. I didn’t need to spend $ 1,700 because nothing was wrong! ! !  I did, however, opt for all four tires and still saved myself $ 1,000 by going to my local and trustworthy Ultimate Tire Service. (http://www.ultimatetireandservice.com/index.php)

It is disappointing to know there are folks just waiting to prey upon, what they consider, an easy target.  But there are still good guys out there doing their job and honest work. They may be difficult to locate… but DO keep looking and ask around.  Hopefully you will find them where you live! (and when you find them….tell others!)

Thanks, Renae, for the post.  I cannot help but wonder if this guy was trying to pull this because you were a woman by yourself, or it he does this to everyone?  As a follow-up, I really think you should send your hubby in with the other vehicle, and just see how that goes?  😉  Just a thought!

A Double Rainbow Kinda Evening ~

Even though it was a stormy evening, I did not want to miss the opportunity at hand.  The rain began while we in route to our destination, but it was not yet uncontrollable.  We parked the car and were barely inside the building when my husband’s phone rang.  It was his friend asking if I had my camera as there was a double rainbow.  How disappointing!  I did not have my camera as it was not allowed where we were headed.  The last double rainbow we had viewed was on our Colorado trip and was between mountains.  We had to pull our car over and just take it in that day.  We would miss this one.   I was on a mission to see an old friend. We were to celebrate his 79th birthday.  An old friend that never even knew me.  But I knew him ~

We entered the intimate setting of The Joint, at Hard Rock Casino in Tulsa, Oklahoma.  (http://www.hardrockcasinotulsa.com/thejoint/Pages/default.aspx) Having been here before, we knew that no matter where the seats were located, they would be great ones.  What I especially like about this night, was that we were in the “younger set”.  That doesn’t happen so often anymore.

Finally, it was time.  The legend of country music appeared on the stage, Mr. Roy Clark.  He donned a blue embroidered western style jacket.  I wasn’t certain it was him.  And then I saw that smile, and that sparkle in his eyes, and I knew.  I was taken back to when I was a little girl and watching him on Hee-Haw.  He could sing and play just about any instrument, but mostly, he made you feel good in the moment.  He made you laugh.

Tonight his band manager helped him get situated.  Roy Clark was not comfortable.  He walked a bit stooped over and I worried that he would trip on the chords strung all over the stage.  He said that he had recently had a hip replacement.  That explained a lot.  The fiddle player stayed near him at all times, as if to “be ready” in the event he needed him.  Each person on that stage loved him and they were there to help him through the evening.  We in the audience felt the same way.

When he picked up that guitar and started playing….He was the young Roy Clark I once knew. Playing “Ghost Riders in the Sky”.   He needed no help.  I looked to my right and to my left, and all I saw were knees going up and down, most of them in beat. 😉 People were clapping and smiling.  All were immediately taken in…

Several friends and celebrities came on stage to share in Mr. Clark’s birthday celebration.  One group that joined him on stage, was the Tulsa Playboys.  (https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100003404373357&ref=ts#!/pages/Tulsa-Playboys/116882751733410) They were extremely polished and dressed like cowboys should be.  If there had been a dance floor in that place…we would have been attempting our two-step! Just awesome.  Another “friend” that joined him on stage was a former Hee-Haw fiddle player.  Her name escapes me, but the fiddle did not play her.  She was a master of that fiddle.  Roy Clark was handed a fiddle and kinda forced to join in….it was quite the duet.  He smiled and as he played with much concentration, you could see that sparkle in his eye again.

Eventually, a server from Hard Rock wheeled out a huge and beautiful guitar cake ( you can see it here,  https://www.facebook.com/#!/pages/Tiny-Cakes-Truffles/149856551725943 ) all aflame with the 79 candles!  Roy Clark leaned across that stage and shook hands with the young man who brought it out.  Now doesn’t that say a lot about the character of this man.  It did to us.  Several on stage helped him blow out the candles.  The crowd sang “Happy Birthday” to him.  He thanked and “God Bless” ed all, once again.  And he meant it.

He didn’t do many songs.  But the ones he did, were treasures, just like him.  We giggled when he started “Thank God and Greyhound She’s Gone”. Everyone sang along.  It’s just that kinda song!

It occurred to me later, when I thought about that double rainbow before the show, that I had NOT missed it.  Nope.  My double rainbow happened right before my eyes that night.   Seldom.  Unique.  Priceless.  Holding hands with my hubby and listening to Roy Clark, live.  It couldn’t get any better than that.

If I Had To DO IT ALL OVER AGAIN ~ Roy Clark
