A View through the Castle Window ~

Hubby has been off for a week of much-needed time away.  That last Sunday before going back on Monday is always dreaded.  Kind of like an all day reminder that “the party’s over”.  Note to self, don’t forget to buy the lotto tickets this week!

As I mentioned in my Happy Anniversary  post, our younger set of kids have been in Ireland for the past couple of weeks.  We didn’t hear from them the first few days and yes, it was concerning to this mother’s heart.  I just needed to know their flight landed safely AND hear it/read it from them.  The assuming thing has never worked well for me.  Nor has the no news is good news.  Give me concrete.

And finally, a few days into their trip AND into ours, an “UNAVAILABLE” showed up on my caller ID….and it was them.  It was very refreshing to hear their voices and learn of their experiences thus far.  We have now talked several times and even did the Facebook video once. (similar to Skype)

No matter how hard I try to be a normal adult friend to my kids, the “mom” just comes out.  I can’t help it.  I found myself asking about their car, the roads, the traffic.  Did they see sunshine?  How was the food, were they taking their probiotics?  Were the people kind? Did they feel safe in their bed and breakfasts?  And then after twenty questions, they broke their silence on a secret.  The ultimate “don’t” they “did”.  Worse than running with scissors.  They picked up a stranger, at a bank no less, when exchanging for euros.  They crammed her into the back of their tiny rented car with their mega luggage.  They drove her to the Cliffs of Moher, as they were going there anyways.  She was a graduate student from the states, backpacking alone through much of Europe.  She would eventually return home to teach.  She wanted to know more of the tornadoes of Oklahoma and Missouri.  They spent much of that day with her.  She could have been an axe murderer.  But I talked to them after the fact, so if she was, she spared them.  Thank. Goodness.

I still struggle some days, wrapping my head around “social media”.  It is because of Skype minutes and Facebook that we were able to stay in communication with our traveling children.  And because of Facebook, twitter and WordPress, that I have met each of you or reconnected with you!  Scaling the path of resistance can lead to broader horizons.  I have never been to Ireland.  But I have now seen a view of it through a castle window via Facebook video.  I have not picked up a hitch hiker in many moons.  But I have found you through my daily travels.  And hopefully none of you are axe murderers, either.  I miss you when I am gone.

I have much catch up to do now.  Thanks for listening to my ramblings.  HaPPy Monday to each of you! 🙂  Join me in trying really hard to be nicer to people!  Even on days when it’s a struggle. ♥

p.s.  One other thing I found humor in while talking to the kids.  On their ride to the cliffs with their axe murderer, what song would come on the radio of their mini-car but, “Okie from Muskogee”.  Who woulda thunk it in Ireland? What a lovely place! 🙂

I’m still out “playing” this week and am anxious to share photos and funnies we’ve come across through the week. Today though, I am sharing with you a great visit from my friend, Bonnie at Paper Keepers. She has been on a roadtrip also, and this week, our paths crossed. Though we just met via cyberspace a few months ago, it seems we are kindred spirits ~ so join in on the festivies! And I’ll see ya again soon! ♥

Road Trip – Stop 2: Oklahoma or Bust!

Oh, I’ve been ‘driving’ for days it seems. And I thought my butt hurt last week! 🙂 Since I left Arizona last week, my little Triumph has logged another 1,113 miles…and a layer of dust as I darted through the deserts of Arizona, New Mexico and Texas.  I am so glad to make a stop today, because as they say, Oklahoma is the place to be!  And, if you don’t know Paula, from Stuff I Tell My Sister, well, after meeting her, you’re gonna want to tell your sister!

Paula and I connected in the last few months, and yet it feels like I have known her forever.  I am so glad to be here, Paula is the salt of the earth, funny as can be, and she’s so nice, but not just nice, she’s nice with a side of spice. The…

Fire and Rain in Oklahoma

Yesterday was a stressful day of devastating fires throughout our state.  Many homes and structures have been lost. Our firefighters are exhausted fighting this devil in the triple digit temps.  The winds were strong, the air thick like fog.  There was a smell of smoke as ashes fell from the sky.  Health warnings suggested staying inside.  The ash is dangerous to breathe.  And just as I was about to spread a little water on our trees last night, I was greeted with a pleasant surprise.  Thunder.  Lightning. Rain.  Unfortunately, for the areas burning, the shifting winds just stirred the fire to flames again.  Fires are still burning today. Please join Oklahoma and surrounding states in praying for rain and relief.   Thank you to our fire fighters and the many volunteers!

~ And yes, I DID say I was outta here for a few days….and now I am! 🙂

Random Pics and Such ~

Last night I discovered some friendly little ants in my kitchen.  It was still 105 F outside, but I decided to head to our local hardware store for some ant bait.  I talked hubby into coming along for the ride.  I jumped out to run inside and handed him the camera.  “Have some fun!” I said ~I am taking off for a few days…..but may drop in a pic or two along the way.   Our sunset colors from the photos taken here are because we are surrounded by fires.  Many homes have been lost already.  The fires continue to burn.  Praying for the victims, the firefighters and  for some much-needed rain and heat relief ~Thanks, hubby, for the pics!  I need to throw you the camera more often!  See ya soon and BE NICE to each other!   🙂

It’s So Hot Outside, You Could Fry an Egg ~ Or Could You?

Same story every day, right now. Extreme.  Heat.  Drought.  Many times, living in Oklahoma, I have heard the phrase, “It’s so hot outside, you could fry an egg!”  So day before yesterday, when I took my hubby some lunch, I hijacked him to the back of his store and told him, “We are going to fry eggs.”  He had no choice but to play as he was a passenger victim in my car!

So here was try # 1: One on asphalt, one on concrete.Yuck.  Fifteen minutes later, not much.

Attempt 2, yesterday:This time on foil to hopefully help the “fry”.If you like over easy….then yes, it worked.  Kinda. And dinner is served!  It only took two and a half hours!  But the point is, we tried it.  And it’s gotta be pretty darn hot to make this happen!  Nope.  Didn’t eat them ~   But then, you knew that~ 🙂

Have a great Friday!  And be nice to people.  And maybe do something silly….just cause you can!!!  hubby still shaking head back and forth

An unusual sighting last night.  A cloud ~  What does this have to do with eggs?  Absolutely nothing!

Happy August Anniversaries!

I cannot believe it is already August!  And I will be saying this about September before we know it.  August is so stinking hot where we live!  So why oh why, do people favor this month to get married?  I don’t know ~ I just show up to the weddings. Well two of the three, anyways.

1.  HaPPy Anniversary to my youngest son, Chi, and his bride, Angie.  I do believe they chose the hottest day in the history of SW Missouri to get married, OUTSIDE.  Yes, you heard that right.  August. Outside.  Kids that are in love and that are making their wedding plans in the wintertime, think nothing of temp possibilities, heat stroke victims, folks sweating like pigs,(although I learned that pigs DON’T actually sweat so I don’t know why this phrase is coined as such) and keeping the reception cool. Not until the week of the wedding, that is.

Okay…enough of that….the point is that today is Angie and Chi’s 4th anniversary.  WOO HOO & Congrats!  And they are off to Ireland for a couple of weeks.  Now how’s that for a celebration!?

2.  Also celebrating an anniversary this month are Renae and Steve ~ (sister & hubby)  They have been married a LONG time! Thirty plus years!  They too, chose an August OUTDOOR wedding.  In Oklahoma!  It was fun though.  I recall picking up the wedding cake.  The bakery had the color trim wrong.  They told me it would fade to the right color.  It didn’t.  But I think it may have melted.  I also recall the photographer backing up for a shot and falling over a tree in my parent’s backyard. That still makes me giggle a bit. But it  was a beautiful wedding with great music and two lovely people.

HaPPy Anniversary you guys!!!  And Congrats!

3.  Faye & Garland  aka ~ Mom and Dad! were also married in August!  If not for them, the above marriages would never have occurred!  They were married in 1954, in Marlow, Oklahoma. BUT INSIDE!  And on the 8th of August, they will be at 58 years. (Read Faye’s Story, to learn more about their courtship.)  Wow…..  Congrats, Mom & Dad. HaPPy Anniversary!

♥♥♥ HaPPy Anniversary to you ALL! ♥♥♥

May the Force Be With You ~

Hubby is working ridiculous hours 70 plus right now as he has a co-manager loaned out.  Working six days a week on your feet is no carnival for anyone.  Hubby’s attitude remains pretty good under the circumstances. better than mine! I just know it is not healthy for him physically or mentally to do this for long.  I will continue to sing to my now grown boys, “Mama’s don’t let your babies grow up to be retail managers.”

THANK GOD, and I say this with sincerity from my heart, that his store is closed on Sundays!  So on this day of rest, yesterday, we decided to get out of the house before it got too hot (100 F), have some breakfast and go to the Tulsa Home and Garden Show.  We accomplished all of these things and as we were driving home (and now it is reading 108 F) I mention that we will be passing Pancho Anaya Bakery.  Hubby says, “That sounds good, we’ll stop.” But I say, “No, we are eating healthy now, I was just throwing that out there to test us.  You are supposed to be the strong one to say we better not.”  Suddenly, another force took over the car.  Maybe it was the heat?

And $8.99 later, we had a bag FULL of goodies, 2 REAL cokes with sugar not corn syrup, AND wheat tortillas for dinner.

We decided when hubby DOES have a day off, why not make it a holiday?

Back to the real world today.  But there is a bit of sugary goodness left over on the counter.  I think I may have to have one with my morning smoothie ~  🙂

A Sunday Afternoon Drive ~

I heard the term often growing up, “Oh, they are just out for a Sunday afternoon drive,” my dad would say when we’d get behind someone driving a bit slow.  And on special Sundays, it would be our little family out for that drive.  Especially if we had been to my grandparents house where my folks grew up.  I loved seeing the gymnasium where my mom used to play basketball and the creek where my dad would have fist fights. he would always win, ya know!  And yes, I even loved driving the distance of how far they walked to school in 8 feet of snow.  My mind would try to see them in that place.  Kids.  But they were certainly not kids without  cares.  My dad was the oldest of eleven children.  My mom was the second oldest of eight.  There were many chores on their farms that had to be completed BEFORE walking to school.  And then more to do when they got home.  How did they do it?  Did they complain?  I don’t know.  I doubt it though.  It was just what they did to survive.

When hubby and I married, it was a relief to find out that he too, grew up with parents that on occasion, would venture out on those Sunday afternoon drives.  We took our boys on those drives when they were still at home.  It was great family time.  Hubby and I still enjoy this tradition.   Perhaps because on our way to nowhere, we never know who or what we might find ~Happy Weekend, friends ~  Be good to others, it will be returned to you ♥
